It really depends on what you want and how much you want to spend for it. For games and tv, it should be fine. Kenwood doesn't have the BEST of speakers, but it is enough to get by, and it is a simple one time buy thing, instead of having to shop around. However if you ever want to go the component route (which almost everybody seriously into sound will recommend), then you're going to have to spend more and research the parts you want to buy. If you can go audition this setup (maybe a local store that carries it), then go ahead and see if it meets your needs. Only your ears can tell :)

You'd be better off picking up a receiver to start off with for about $300. This is the foundation for your home theater system. Those systems you see on uBid aren't all that great. My parents have the HTB-203 and I have to say I was pretty disappointed with it.

There's really only one thing I can say about home theater equipment: You get what you pay for. Everyone has different standards. Personally I would rather not have a home theater system at all than one of the ones you've linked to.

One of the best combinations on the market are Paradigm speakers and Yamaha receivers. I just put together a value set for my sister's boyfriend for 1200 5 speakers one amp.

Most major cities have a paradigm dealer.

Paradigm

Go here and do a dealer locator and cheak them out. You will NOT be dissappointed.

They have won the best value award for 5 years straight.

my two cents

I have spent about 15 years as a audio phreak. gathering info and countless auditions with gear, tweaking speaker placements by two inches just to be amazed at the difference in sound.

that being said, the kenwood home-theatre in a box systems sound absolutely fabulous for the money. my friend bought one for about 500 bucks (receiver, 5.1 speakers). sounded pretty decent...for 500 bucks it sounded great. yeah i've got over 10K in my HT alone, but 500 bucks...what a bargain.

dts, digital

hey auto,

to tell you the truth I don't know their model lines very well to say what is good. The ones I've heard are a lot of bang for the buck.

the one part that bothered me on that link was the high price and the word refurbished. plus no DTS support. from the specs it is underpowered and underfeatured when compared to the one my friend got for 500 retail.

If somebody just picked that up for $114, I would say it is a pretty good deal as long as it actually works, which when it is refurbushed it is hard to say. I s/b receiving a Kenwood HTB-504 tomorrow from UPS, and I have heard that it has great sound for $400. I will enjoy listening to it any way. The one you linked to is the lowest level that Kenwood has I think so the amp is only 80Wx5 with an unpowered subwoofer. As you go up the model lines they step up to 100Wx5 with a 100W powered subwoofer which is what I got. The cheapest ones you can get retail at over $300, so it didn't take much to convince me to spend the extra $100 and get the top of the line model.

well, it is a 80 watt system with dobly digital.

will it sound better than the speakers in your TV? heck yes. if you can get it cheap then thats a good setup to start with.

later when you do have a job start getting some speakers...then replace your receiver...then buy your 71" mitsu...then get a 7 channel amp...then a separate processor...then..then..it never stops.

way I see it that system is an entry level home theater in a box. good place to start if you don't want to blow money. heck I was a college guy once but at least I had a 3000 dollar home stereo and loved every minute of it.

I would go for a JVC.....good bang for the buck and if possible aim for 100w per channel. Trust me you won't need a sub with that or if you do buy one you won't use it...hell, I'll sell you mine! Try the Messina line of speakers.. good value. I 've seen these kits at Costco that looked reasonable enough for the price. I would go really entry level or go for the gold...the mid range is basically throwing your money away....you'll eventually want to upgrade and you will lose alot when you re-sell them, an el-cheapo you lose less.

I'm tempted to say just see whichever you can get the better deal on and buy it since you're on a budget. You can save up for a MUCH better system once you get a job :)

<< arent most dvds dolby though? >>

Yes, almost all DVDs have a Dolby Digital soundtrack, however, some people argue that discs which are presented in DTS are better, because it's a higher bandwidth encoding. I personally think both formats are excellent, and that differences are negligable.

<< or what about this one? ???? >>

That one there isn't too bad, because as you can see it comes with a powered sub. That's something you really want to look at. The HTB-203 unfortunately sounds pretty bad. My parents own it (I regret to say I bought it for them as a Christmas gift as a complement to their new Toshiba 55" big screen) and it's just not worth what I paid for it.

If you absolutely HAVE to have one of these cheap systems, fine. Buy one. I just don't think you'll be happy. You really shouldn't need something like this when you don't have the money. If you can't do something right, don't do it at all.
