Does this sound like a good deal?

I'm thinking of trading my current desktop (D 930, Abit AW8, X800XL, 160GB+80GB HD's, 2GB RAM, 500W PSU) for an older shuttle and lappy. The specs for both are:

Shuttle:

nForce 3 (S939)
FX-55
X800Pro
250GB HD
DVD burner
2GB RAM

Laptop:

Alienware 51m
P4 2.8 GHz
512MB RAM
DVD burner
5600Go
60GB HD

I would mainly be using it for graphic design and browsing the web, plus some occasional gaming. Do you think the shuttle could handle that as well as my desktop? And do you think it's a good trade overall? Thanks a bunch! :)

Is the graphic design software you run multithreaded? If so, you would lose a pretty big chunk of performance going from a dual core back to a single core. If not, the FX55 will be a good bit faster than the Pentium-D 930, of course since it's socket 939, you could always sell the FX-55 and buy an AMD dual core, which would be better than the pentium-d weather your programs were multithreaded or not. The laptop is a bit dated, mediocre graphics card, and power hungry CPU, so it wouldn't exaclty have good battery life. Overall I think you would be getting the better end of the deal.

I think it's quite obvious who is getting the better deal. Hopefully the 2 items in trade are fully functional with a legit copy of Windows. :p

stevty: The main program I use is Photoshop, so it might take a hit with the 55. But yeah, I could always sell it and get an X2 with the money if it makes a drastic difference. Otherwise, like you said, the 55 should be faster. A question I had though: The mobo in the Shuttle is nForce 3 - will that accept X2?

I would double check, but as far as I know, with a bios update at most, all 939 boards support X2.
