Does this sort of transmission exist?

OK you have an auto with a torque convertor that loses power. Then you have a manual standard transmission. Then you have the SMG which uses paddles and although it automatically shifts with a paddle press it's still a manual transmission at heart.

SO my question is is there a transmission that doesn't have a torque convertor but full automates shifting like a normal automatic does? Picture it as an SMG but instead of paddles the shifts are computer controlled.
 
Continuous Variable Transmission is the closest you are going to come to that description.

Basically a belt driven transmission with variable pulleys.
 
A CVT never really shifts though, it is as it says continuously variable

But then again I know nothing about cars, thats just what I thought the CVT was
 
i still can't get over the fact that a CVT doesn't shift. that would just feel weird. i think audi makes their CVT have pseudo shifts
 
I suppose but don't they still have a torque convertor?

Not the newer ones, they disengage through a hydraulic clutch which is governed by engine speed and brake actuation.

Well then you get manual transmission efficiency without shifting at all! I guess eventually the goal of CVT is to be a little better than a manual though.
i still can't get over the fact that a CVT doesn't shift. that would just feel weird
My mother's old subaru justy had one. You floor it and the revs would just sit around 4k or whatever as long as you kept the pedal down :Q

You're speaking of torque converters as if they're a bad thing...

Torque multiplication has advantages and disadvantages....

As Roger says, a Constantly Variable Transmission is the closest thing to that you're going to find.

Think of it as an ever-changing transmission...

Actually, I think a CVT would feel cool. The pull would always be there, you wouldn't have to let up and shift.. or you wouldn't feel the shift in an auto..
 
You're speaking of torque converters as if they're a bad thing...

Torque multiplication has advantages and disadvantages....

As Roger says, a Constantly Variable Transmission is the closest thing to that you're going to find.

Think of it as an ever-changing transmission...

If I could have adapted one to fit my Bus and the Corvair engine in it, I wouldn't have given it a second thought 🙂

I think the just introduced DSG transmission by VW/Audi might meet your needs. It's actually a manual, but can work like a auto.

 
Correct me if I am wrong, but there are two.

The first one and oldest is a transmission used in some Karma Ghias, had a clutch and shifted like an automatic. Didn't work to well after high mileage.

The second is a Lenco racing transmission, same set up as the first, but you could customize it from a two speed to a four speed transmission.

Sure, just use an SMG set to shift gears automatically.

I tried the Audi A4 3.0 CVT and while it's definitely cool how it gets the best of both worlds of an auto and stick in performance and convenience, I really didn't care for it. WHen you drive a car hard you expect to hear the engine moving through its gears sequentially and the sounds as you move through each gear become part of the visceral experience. CVT totally killed it for me - the engine sounded sickly as even when I floored it, it stuck around 4-5000 RPMS. And while the performance was clearly there, the experience wasn't - it's almost like the sounds of speed are as important as the speed itself.
