"In my own earnest for success...."

Someone is asking me my opinion for an essay she is writing. What do you guys think?

Nope.

Earnest is an adjective, it'd be like saying:

In my own blue for success...

Did she perhaps leave out a word?

In my own earnest quest for success...

"Earnest" can be used as a noun, but it doesn't really work in this case. Think of an earnest as a deposit on something.

I HATE it when people ask me to critique their writing. While my casual writing style doesn't reflect it, I do have a strong sense of style and usage, and can critique another's writing well. Sorta like the psychologist who is great at diagnosing and analyzing others, but his own life is a mess. haha

Invariably, I get out the red pen and start going to work on their stuff. They get it back and like never talk to me again. I always feel bad, but then I get defensive and think, "You shouldn't have asked if you weren't prepared to hear the truth!"
