I know people here like to avoid Western Union. What are the problems with it? Should I trust him, and ship via paypal? I was under the impression that craigslist was local....not shipped 😕

if he wires you the money, and you have it in your hand first before shipping, i dont see what the problem is
 
yes, it is the "western union me the money scams" that are the worst. If he pays before pickup, that would be OK. I seriously doubt he'd do that though. I'll bet he'll come back with, "as soon as fedex picks up and confirms, I will wire you the money........"
 
Craigslist is a local service, so if he wants it that bad, he can meet you someplace for the deal. Nevermind all this western union bullsh!t!

BTW, I bet he backs out if you ask him to meet you in person.
