I'm trying to sell my car and the guy apparently who is talking for his "client" said his client wanted to buy my car. He said his client will send me a cashier cheque, "wth, is that the same thing is cashier check?" He said he will send me $19,600 cashier cheque through courier service and I am to send him back the remaining balance. He is buying the car for $12,000 so I would send him back $7,600. After I send him back the remaining, the guy will come test drive the car, pick it up and drive it home.

I remember a scam about someone sending you however much and you have to send back the remaining balance. Is this fine or should I be worried?

If you really want to bust his chops, tell the cops or fbi about it and setup a sting operation. Then when he comes and pick up the car, BAM!

I'd do it. I'm only saying this because it's not my money.

He's trying to scam you you have nothing in writing.

I have to wonder how they'll pull that scam on a cashier's check though...fradulent bank maybe? Forged check?

I mean, real cashier's checks have to be pre-paid, there is no "stop payment".

well first off the scammer has a chance. You just don't seem to bright.

Heck if you have to post if this is a scam they have a chance! Not to mention you need to ask what "chashier cheque" is.

this is sad posting..sigh i just hope you are neffing.

Well if I deposit the check into my account, and he claims its fradulent, wouldn't they pull out the money from my bank account? Like if I deposited the $19,600 check into my account, and pull out $7,600 to send back to him, and pull out the $12,000 to buy whatever, I would end up oweing the bank $19,600.

Couldn't I just take the cashier check to a place that cashes cashier's check? Or they won't cash a check that big.

Doesn't make sense to write off 19,000 and send the remaining back. its porbably to get your car for free then your $$$ as well.

It does seem fishy, but I'm not quite sure how this is a scam. Exchange rate maybe? I'm assuming you aren't actually going to send him anything until he picks up the car.

Why would someone send me a cashier's check for more then what I'm selling the car for? If I cash that check into my account and the person claims someone stole their credit card or whatever, wouldn't that check be bounced?

OK FOR THE UMPTEENTH TIME...

The check will post into your account. You will send the guy the balance owed. He will pick up the car. Then the bank will subtract the amount of the original cashiers check from your account as it is a fake. You are now out of a car and (in this case) $7600. If your bank balance doesn't cover it, you now owe the bank the rest...

I thought you needed to have the funds up front in order to have your bank issue you a cashiers check? BofA always deducted the money right away before printing out the cashiers check.

I just read SmootchyTX's link and it explains the FDIC loophole. I'm surprised a bank with auth a check if its a forgery. I understand why now, but its still kinda surprising.

I call shenanigans.
It is absolutely not possible that everyone on the face of the earth hasn't heard of this scam yet.

It makes perfect sense if you think about it. A scammer doesn't even have the real amount to purchase your car. so if he sends you the exact amount, has to come pick up the car which is nowhere to be seen or is impossible to do for them, wants you to wire money into their account(so convenient). VERY ILLEGAL! Stay away as far as possible! Unless you are really desperate, and you have no one to blame but yourself if you don't put on your thinking cap.
