Does this price seem too low to you?

I stumbled across this posted just a couple hours ago:

Alienware , Area-51 , A51 , Pentium , 4 , Laptop , 3.06 , GHz

Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.07GHz
1GB RAM
60GB Hitachi HDD
DVD ROM/CD-RW Combo
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
64MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 Video (Dual Monitor Support!)
Spare Battery for optional dual battery setup included!
Ultra Slim SONY 802.11g card INCLUDED!
All original CD's, Manuals, Cases, and BOXES are all included!
FLAWLESS LCD SCREEN AND UPDATED KEYBOARD!

Asking price? $500

They have pictures of everything, including closeups of minor scuffs & marks from everyday use, plus pictures of all the original packaging.

Should I be wary? It doesn't scream stolen to me (with all the original packing materials) but I would think it'd be worth at least double that.

You do remember the simple adage "if it seems too good to be true it isn't" don't you? If so then you have answered your own question.

There is such a thing as someone not knowing what something is worth, needing cash & a quick sell, etc.

They have pictures of it running, & I'd test it thoroughly (it's local to me).

As for stolen that was my first thought but how many things do you see stolen with all the original packaging (both inner and outer shipping boxes) and a 3 ring binder with all the documentation/CD's/etc.?

Would Alienware be likely to know if it were stolen? Assuming of course it was reported to them...

If that was a desktop PC and not a laptop, I could understand the price.

$500 for a 3.06GHz laptop? An ALIENWARE laptop? Those things are bloated in price anyway. How is the seller not taking a huge loss? Why are they willing to take such a huge loss? I wouldn't buy it.

Well that obviously would be a scam.

:)

And yes it is on Craigslist. I'm not a complete idiot, I got a scam offer on the air conditioner I posted on craigslist too. I'm going to write him back & tell him my asking price is about 5x it's real value & see what he says.

BTW I figure it's real value is around $1K, I had a 3.06 GHz P4 laptop a year ago (granted it was a Dell), complete with 64 MB video, 60 GB 7200 RPM HD, 1 GB, etc. They were worth around $1500 new then (before I added another 512 MB).

Even though it's local and and he has pics and everything, I bet he'll say he's from the UK when you e-mail him. I e-mailed someone who had a San Antonio ad for the exact same laptop.

[EDIT]Now that I re-read it at the very bottom I see it says something about shipping... You guys are probably right. Bet they aren't interested in local pickup.[/EDIT]

That's almost the exact same ad

Exact same ad as what?

Viper GTS

The one from the guy I e-mailed, it was an ad posted in the San Antonio section awhile back.

EDIT: http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/sys/84062983.html

He posted it again there too...

No mention of the screen resolution. Appears to be based on a Clevo 5600D model, if I am not mistaken.

It actually isn't terribly underpriced, but difficult to ascertain its true value without seeing it first hand. Read up on the Sager model equivalent (NP5660) at Notebookforums.

Good luck.

Well then I'd say it's definitely a scam.

Guess I'll be telling him to kiss my ass when he e-mails me back.
