Does this memory have to be installed in pairs?

I remember Rambus (r.i.p.) had to be installed in pairs or it didn't work, end of story.
I want to add a GB of DDR2 SDRAM, PC2-4200 in my system. I have two open slots. Do I need to get two 512 sticks or can I just install a single 1GB stick (which would be cheaper) One person told me yes, another no, so I'm totally confused....

Depends on your board... usually DDR and DDR2 system can be installed as One

Hi, You are correct about RAMBUS but one of the sticks could be a dummy. It had no mem chips, only interconnections. Your best bet is to check your MB manual to see if it needs pairs. If you don't have it try the MB Maker's Site. Years ago a lot of MBs did need pairs. Haven't seen any in years. Jim
