Seriously, why should prisoners be exempt from the situation which the rest of us law-abiding citizens find ourselves in; that is, we have to work for our meals and lodging. Thus, prisoners should have to do the same, if they are physically able. I'm sure some form of industry could be established in most prisons, and if a prisoner does not earn, he does not eat. If I have to work for a living, so does a criminal. Or, if a prisoner has sufficient resources, he/she can reimburse the state for the cost of their imprisonment.
