After a couple of weeks of looking around, this seemed like the best bang for my buck. Anyone have any thoughts? (Good pc? Bad pc? Gateway = scary? I know very little about the pc world, unfortunately)
Gateway® M460XL-QS
Integrated Wireless Networking Adapter: Integrated 802.11a/g wireless networking card

Memory: 512MB 400MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Hard Drive: 80GB 5400rpm Ultra ATA hard drive
Floppy Drive: Integrated 4-in-1 card reader
Optical Drive: Modular 8x Multi-Format DVD Writer (DVD±R/±RW/CD-RW)
Expansion Slots: One type II PC card slot
External Ports: (4) USB 2.0, VGA, TV Out, S-Video, IEEE 1394 (FireWire)

Video: ATI Radeon X600 128MB Graphics
Battery: Primary 6-Cell Lithium ion battery with AC pack and 1 yr. limited battery warranty
Modem: Integrated V.90 56K Modem
Network Adapter: Integrated Intel® 10/100/1000 Ethernet Adapter
The whole thing weighs about 6lbs, and costs about $1399 before the warranty. It seems to have a good mix of stuff for both gaming (PM 750, 128mb Radeon, 5400rpm HDD), as well as handy extras (DVD burner, 512mb RAM in 1 slot, widescreen). Do I have a winner? Or should I go back to the drawing board?
