I need a compact (very small) portable player that I can get AM reception with. All I can seem to find are the ones with an FM tuner. I did some googling but the ones that came up are also a CD player, and I don't want that.

any help here is appreciated, thanks.

thanks, but it appears to be just like all the rest....only an FM tuner. I don't see anywhere that it receives AM signals. please correct me if I'm wrong.

Not 100% sure, but I don't think there are any with am. I think it would make it to big. Does it have to be an mp3 player? Could just get one of these sony s2 jogging radios.

I haven't seen any either, it's very unfortunate and a big part of why I don't own one. They obviously can do it; walkmans 20 years ago had AM tuners and tiny AM radios can be had these days on the cheap as well. Apparently too much of the target audience is too busy listening to britney spears on WCRAP 104.7 to listen to "dat dumbyhead talk radio, ololololo"

Yep, I'm a big sports junkie as well...but I can't find any MP3 player that supports AM. Maybe it isn't a big thing anymore...

it's sad, but at least we know there's a market for an AM tuner in these things. i'll wait until they make one before buying a portable mp3 player.

Generally speaking, amplitude modulation/demodulation takes more power and bigger components than frequency modulation/demodulation. Thats why they moved FM and Stereo audio to the higher frequencies for commercial use.
Since MP3 players keep getting smaller the companies have less incentive to try and get AM on them. But yes, it should be possible in this day and age.

One day we will have sattelite recievers that small and you can listen to XM while walking around with your MP3 player. :)

Thats pretty close but not as light and portable as I was thinking. But definately a step in the right direction.

Yup, the usual ferrite bar antenna alone will make what you want too big for what most people seem to want these days. About the best you can do right now is a CD player w/ AM/FM that also plays MP3 and the Win audio format files off CDs - I'd like one of those that would play the OGG format too. How long will I have to wait for that? Better not hold my breath... The FM side can use the headphone cord for an antenna - takes no space in the design. Too bad the AM wavelengths are so darn long - but they could have a jack for an external antenna that could be attached to clothing or something... J & R Music/Compter World had a really nice AM/FM/CD/MP3 in their Friday sale this past week.

that makes total sense zepper. although, if they could fit an MP3 player in something like the radio i'm using now, i'd be very happy. and i don't see why they couldn't do that. THIS is what i've been using for years and it's small enough for me.

That's what bbruin tried to point out before but failed to supply a link. It's neat that it allows you to time-shift your radio listening and can be expanded with cheap SD cards. I've seen the small one for around $120. Froogle is your friend

I've also been searching for an mp3 player with a built-in AM/Fm tuner to listen to at work. I dont wanna miss out on my AM newstalk radio, local sports radio stations, and an AM christian station.

**I may have found another posible solution....

There is an MP3 player made by GPX called MWDT3004SP. What confuses me about this product is on the manufacturer's own website, http://www.gpx.com/pages/products_ind.php?id=247&flag=cat , it is listed as a "Sports WMA MP3 AM FM Player" . But an online store i found it on, http://www.800greatdeals.com/product_info.php?products_id=213 , only lists it as having an FM tuner- No mention of AM!? when i first found this GPX website, i was searching for about a month to find a store that carried it. aparently they advertised for it before it hit the shelves. and now it seems like its not even measuring up to what GPX promoted it as. I am still looking into this issue. i will contact 800greatdeals.com to find some answers....

I have also been wondering about AM on mp3 players. I guess nobody listens to sports and talk radio anymore :(
I think a GPRS capable MP3 player (maybe a smart phone or pda) would be good since most stations have live streaming audio now.
