Hello,

You guys seem to be really knowledgable, and was wondering if I could get some advice on this new computer I'm putting together.

I'm not planning on overclocking. Also, I have a 24 inch widescreen monitor (1920 x 1200) which is why I decided to get a high end graphics card.

Here's what I've got:

CPU: Core 2 Duo 6600
Motherboard: ASUS P5K ATX
Case: Coolermaster CAC-T05 Centurion 5
Power Supply: OCZ GameXStream 600W
Memory: 4 x Corsair Value Select PC2-5300 1024MB
Hard Drives: 2 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB
DVD writer: Samsung SH-S183L Black SATA
Video card: BFG GeForce 8800GTX OC 600MHZ 768MB
OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition 64BIT
Floppy: None
Sound Card: None

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

You should wait until July 22 when Intel drops the prices. If you don't play a lot of games, then downgrade to the 8800GTS-640MB or 8800GTS-320MB because the 8800GTX seems a little bit much.

Unless you need it now wait till the 22nd and pick up a q6600, it will be slightly slower in most things now then the e6600 (slightly lower clockspeed) but it will be faster in a year or so when more multi threaded programs are available. Also you might want to go for a 2x2gb kit instead of getting 4 1 gig sticks to leave room for upgrading (since you are going with vista 64). Finally with a conroe based system overclocking is fairly simple and you might want to try a small overclock as even with a stock heatsink and at stock voltage you should be able to push a couple of hundred mhz extra out of ether the e6600 or the q6600.

Thanks for the replies.

Unfortunately I can't wait until the 22nd. I might upgrade my cpu to a quad core early next year when the 45nm parts are out.
I do intend to play some games, which is why I went with the gtx. I think that at my resolution, I'll be stressing the video card out more then the cpu.
I considered buying 2 gb ram but it was far more expensive per gb then the 1 gb sticks.
Perhaps I'll consider a small overclock in the future, but at this time, I'm really interested in rock solid stability.

Any comments on the other components? Is my plan to use on board sound a bad idea? What about using relatively slow memory?

Thanks again for all the help.

sounds great man.
id try and get 800mhz memory instead of 667, but other than that looks like a great build, enjoy.
just curious, what monitor are you using/planing?

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'll look into all the suggestions.

The monitor I'm using is a Dell 24 inch 2405FPW.

Get the OCZ if you want. Mine has been working flawlessly for over 6 months now. Thing is, with the corsairs, you get modular cables, and this can help on cable management

the small slow 80mm fan in the front of that case might have some trouble cooling ur 7200.10 hdd's since they run pretty warm. and why can't u buy in a few days?
