Does there exist hippie rock in this past decade?

Rock used to have so much magic and wonder to it. Now it's all whiny emo screamo, hip rappers, or hardcore death metal.

However, music is incredibly diverse now. I'm sure there are still a few bands that bring the magic and wonder of the 60s to today. Got any recommendations?

I've asked that many times. I'm a big time 60's psychedelic music fan still listen to early Dead, Pink floyd, Quicksilver messenger service, etc. I try to listen to live music.

In trying to find some new music that fit my taste I listen to Nuggs.net radio. Its a great place to dip into a blend of newer "hippie rock" and older music.

If you consider the spiritual successors to "hippie music" to be those that followed The Dead's improvised jam style, then there is an entire genre of Jam bands out there.

Phish, of course. Umphry's McGee, Moe, Medeski, Martin and Wood, SCI, etc...

Phish is f(*&^! amazing live, but for me their problem has always been lyrics. No question you watch those guys when they are on, and they just bleed talent. ...I did spend a decent portion of my college years going on micro Phish tours (basically 3-5 nights at a time), mostly along the east coast. So, I've seen them a lot (28 shows or so). The giant festivals are generally quite good, but they did show their age before the first retirement, and it was good for them to finish when they did.

It seems, though, that they've managed to regain their stride since their return. I went to the Halloween festival a few years ago in Indio and it was the goddamn tits. Exile on Main Street for second set? nuts. Fuck--Sierra Nevada even brewed a one-time recipe, and only available at that event. nomnom.



If I could have chosen, though, I would much prefer to have done that with the Dead in their heyday; hell, even in the late 80s/90s and sloppy Jerry and corny Weir. The Phish scene draws a lot from sketchy dirty rave kids. I hate that crowd. I'd much prefer the sketchy dirty hippies that followed the Dead around.
