Does the xbox one controller work as well as the 360 on the pc?

So it seems like the Xbox 360 controller is the defacto controller for many games that have controller support. Other controllers seem to sometimes need 3rd party tools for remapping because developers have not supported them.

I am curious if this is the case with the Xbox One Elite controller. I enjoy not having to fidget with any 3rd party tools to get my controller working.

Anyone have experience they can share either way?
 
XB1 controller has native Windows 10 support, but not sure how older versions are. I know that was an initial issue with MS drivers.
