Does the XBox make a decent DVD Player?

Works fine for me. I got a "broken" xbox from my uncle that I've used as the DVD player in my bedroom. The only gripe is that the fan is louder than the noise you would get out of a standard DVD player.

Yep

Not really.

I have used multiple DVD Players, and they are all pretty bad. It always has to do with the controls (using the stupid XBOX controller) and the way it stretched the picture, or the way the borders are handled. I have found that a standard DVD player usually works better.

On the other hand... It DOES work, and it works well... just not as easy/good as a regular DVD stand alone player.

Well i was going to buy a new progressive scan dvd player for my new tv, but if the xbox will work i wont worry about buying another dvd player. I can use my learning remote to replace the xbox remote as it dosent look all too good.

XBox Media Player + network file sharing = bliss

fixed

I agree with you, it is the best media player out there where divx is concerned.

Why do you like Player more than Center? Player isn't even being updated anymore...

I just started watching XVid movies on the XBox but I never tried watching actual DVDs on there since I have a DVD player int he same room.

I don't really give a shiz....either or....I just happen to have player set up at the moment with...uh....I don't even remember what the program is that I have running on my server right now...oh yeah, relax. Damn, it's hard to type after half a fifth of Jaegermeister. Even after drinking, I'm a stickler for spelling. How geeky of me. Phuck it.

It's really not that great of a DVD player. I mean it is convienient, and I wouldn't spend money on a DVD player if I had an X-Box around, but it is far from being a good DVD player.

Also, about Xvid and Divx, they probably look better because you are not used to watching these formats on a TV. Analog TVs are interlaced, which for all intents and purposes creates an anti-aliasing effect, blurring detail, but enhacing overall picture quality - removing macro blocking and such. I will tell you a PC hooked up to a decent HDTV is the best platform for Divx and Xvid.

a PC to do this should probably be at least $500-600 bucks. A MODDED Xbox should cost around $185.

The only thing that sucks about Xbox as a media center, is no remote power switch.. I know you can hack one in there, but it is still ghetto

In XBMC, when you are at the main menu, you can go back to the dashboard, reboot or shut down. Also buy a cheapo wireless controller. I love my setup!!

yes, a modded xbox does progressive scan (480P). Standard does 480I

But a modded xbox dosent work on XBLive?

mine doesn't because its a softmod(copies certain files to hard drive via FTP, and your done in about 10 minutes with a hacked xbox all for 30 bucks.) A mod chip has a switch that should allow you to turn off the chip and use xbox live.

Depends on what mod you use. If you're using the 4th generation chips, then it'll probably have some safety switch that works, If you soft modded it or bridged the two connectors, then probably not.
