Does the Windows Update downloader verify file integrity before installing?

As I downloaded and installed a new Critical Update today I wondered if any file corruption during the download process would be detected by the installer. You know, like a "bad crc" in a zip file. If not, I'd say Windows Update is rather risky if it happened to install some corrupted system files that required a reinstall of the OS. Anybody know if you're playing a game of chance with the installer??
