Does the video card I want exist?

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to find a darn video card to replace my 9800 pro (I sold it for 150$ US about 3 months back)

I'm not sure if I want a really expensive AGP model since it's being phased out - so maybe just a mid-range (in hindsight maybe I should've stuck with the 9800 pro)

I specifically want these features.

Passive or extremely quiet.
HDTV out via component.
AGP slot.
At LEAST as quick as my old 9800 pro.

I found one so close (a gigabyte model) and then growled when I discovered it was PCI-e :(

Any idea's guys? - I've newegg'd and googled my ass off.

Gigabyte makes heatpipe-cooled plain nv 6800 's I have one now. It has DVI-I, VGA, and S-Video, I've never looked into which if any of those can map to component out.

This Gigabyte 6600 AGP card is close to what you want, but it is slower than your 9800 Pro. In fact, it is closer to a 9800SE in performance than the 9800 Pro, since it has slower core and memory clocks. Other than that, it has HDTV support, passive cooling and is less than 150 shipped, so it is a pretty good match for what you want. If you're willing to live with a loss in performance, it might be a good card to tide you over until later in the year when PCIe mobos are cheaper and the new R520-based Radeons have hopefully pushed down prices on the X800XL PCIe cards.

I replaced my 9800pro with a Leadtek 6600gt and I don't notice it being any louder than my 9800pro, but my case fans are not the quietest in the world.

It's a pretty good deal with the rebate right now.

The HDTV works just as well as my 9800pro's did.

The only thing I'm not sure on is if it will be quiet enough for you.

Why do people never read posts correctly? :(

I'm 99.99999% sure the 6800 series don't do HDTV out via component - they only included this in the 6600 series for some reason.

If I'm wrong, I apologise but I'm fairly sure I've looked it up multiple times.

I think the only 6800s that do component out are PCI-e with 256mb ram with 256-bit memory. I'm not sure on this, but I e-mailed a couple companies about info on HDTV 6800 series cards and that was evga's response.

I think it has to do with the 6800 core they are using. The first (AGP and PCIe with bridge) 6800s probably didn't do HDTV because they came out with a core that had a not quite finished video processor (which is why PureVideo didn't fully work on these cards, last time I checked). The 6600 cards came out later with a working video processor, so they all have component HD support, as do the later 256-bit native PCIe versions. I think ALL of the AGP 6800 cards are using the original 6800 core with the sucky video support.

Now, if Gigabyte just made a passive 6600GT model, we'd be in business.

I'm guessing that you need the HDTV because you want to use the machine for HTPC duties. If so, what are your primarily looking for? Good game performance? Good DVD playback? Good DivX and XviD support? I'm wondering because the ATi cards are much better with DivX and XviD thanks to the hardware post processing available in most of the recent Radeons, while the 6600 series kick butt on DVD playback thanks to PureVideo.

You're probably right, hence the part of my post above that's now bolded for emphasis. Fanless cooling I knew, HDTV/component I had/have no idea about.

I was just pointing out a factory-installed heatpipe-cooled card existed, not claiming it would do the other half of what you want :)

Actually no - I'm just sick of having a noisy PC - although it will be going into the loungeroom occassionally to hook up to my HDTV :)

Yea, I would recommend taking a look at that also.
but I am not sure what type of Video cards do HDTV out though.

To my knowledge the 6600 Nvidia, the X800's etc.
The 6800 WON'T do it.
Also - like I said, PCI-e is useless to me :(

I also just got the Leadtek 6600GT. I am using it in a dothan shuttle system, and it's very quiet. I have to put my ear up to the case and concentrate to even hear the thing, even during gaming.

If so.........

Can I unlock the 8 pipes to at least 12 or something ? cause .... 8 - I may as well have just kept my 9800 pro :(

Would the following theories be correct?

Geforce 6600 series has 8 pipes (seems to be NOT unlockable) and hdtv out. (AGP)
Geforce 6800 (AGP) series has 12 or 16 pipes, varying on model - HDTV = impossible.
Geforce 6800 (PCI-e) uses a slightly newer version of the 6800 chip = HDTV out possible

If so,...
Why hasn't anyone released an AGP verison with the NV41 or whatever it is?

Then you've got ATI's offerings.

HDTV avail in the x800 / x800 pro / x800 xl etc...
only the PCI-e versions from gigabyte have passive cooling options.... the AGP versions have a full fan

Sound about right?

(I know in my original post I didn't mention more than 8 pipes a requirement, but it seems silly to sell a 9800 3 months ago and replace it with a card which is not much quicker....... a 12+ pipe version would be nice)

Not quicker by much :(

EDIT / UPDATE:

OH ffsake!

The 6600GT doesn't come in passive from gigabyte - I've been misreading all along.
ONLY the 6600 :(

good lord this sucks - I just want a _REALLY_ quiet card with a bit of beef, AGP and HDTV out.

sigh x10

The leadtek 6600GT is not passivly cooled, but it is very quiet, and has HDTV out, plus still good for gaming.

So you don't like the idea of getting whatever card you want and then putting a really quiet aftermarket HSF on it?
