I'm not the voice of authority here, but I have the 5.1 sound card. It gives surround soud to the 4 satellite speakers AND the centre speaker. The .1 stands for the sub-woofer. The Soundblaster live, from the Creative site, says "Sound Blaster Live! Value produces surround sound audio on your PC with built-in support for two or four analog speakers." So my thinking is it gives support to the 4 satellites and the woofer. Does that make it 4.1? Probably. I'm pretty sure there is no 3.1. Surround sound by definition would mean that each speaker can handle seperate input. But hey, that's just my guess.
