also, i see a lot of people recommend the scythe ninja. is it the best heatsink for around 50 dollars? if you had 50 to spend on a good heatsink setup for overclocking which would you buy? thanks

The stock AMD heatsink with 4 heat pipes works wonder for me. The stock fan even have built in temp. sensors.

For a good heatsink that does not cost you extra, what more could you ask?

Scythe Ninja is one of the best right now. On Ocforums they also like the XP-90C, the XP-120 (or SI-120). All three of those need a fan for high overclocking, though the Ninja works pretty well as a passive h/s as well. The Big Typhoon is also popular. A lot of these heatsinks will be as loud/quiet as the fan you put on them. I've heard that the BT is quiet, but given that it's been used by overclockers, I don't know it compares to SPCR quiet.

Im running a 4000+ at the moment without a fan. 38c idle. no noise from it. down to about 36c with a fan. load temps are about 45c without a fan, 41 with.

I'm currently using a Ninja w/o fan. If I'm reading Speedfan correctly, my CPU is running 31ºC right now. I'm just browsing the forums, meaning CPU is pretty much idle. I have an x2 3800+ at 2.5GHz overclock, no Cool and Quiet. I think load temps goes into the 50's with some high peaks.

Thats awesome for not having a fan. I was thinking of getting one myself, but I got a free stock 165 copper heatpipe sink, so I sold my xp-90, and now im using this. It works great. Its pretty silent anyways.

Peace & ciao !!!

The stock amd heatpipe heatsink appears to be a very solid HSF and is comparable to the xp90. However if you want to get the max performance out of your processor with air cooling then the Ninja with fan, TT Big Typhoon, and Zalman 9500 seem to be the way to go. The Ninja plus fan model just came out, but its pretty expensive to spend an extra 14 bucks for an OEM fan. Petra's Tech has been starting to come out with some pretty decent deals lately, they have the Ninja + Nexus fan for 52 bucks. This is cheaper than the new Scythe combo and you get the quietest (IMO) fan out there. Here's the Link. I've only picked up from these guys so i dont know how much or how fast shipping is.

No it only comes from X2's above 3800+(x2 3800+ has the crappy stock heatsink without heatpipes) and from Dual Core Opterons.

The Ninja isn't $50. It is ~$40. I wouldn't advise buying the "plus" model, because the fan leaves a lot to be desired. Get the regular Ninja and pick up a nice Nexus, or Panaflo fan. Also if look at the Delta Triple Blade fans (Ive also heard some good things about "amber" fans IIRC)
