does the quality of my NIC effect online gaming?

ECHO

I've got a surfboard SB4100 cable modem and connect to the internet through Charter Cable but my online game play (quake) has never been that great. I'm using some cheesy NIC that my friend gave me and he got it when he ordered some kit from computer geeks that is supposed to allow you to set up a home network through your existing phone lines Click here for link I know that it's not a top notch card but figured what the heck, it's free 🙂.

Will I get better game play if I went with a better NIC like Linksys Is there a NIC that know to be better for gaming?

Thanks...

i dont think so i've used comps with d.link, linksys, 3com and intel and they all seem to be pretty much the same IMO though i still only use intel or 3com in my comps just in case

mchammer187,
Yes but those are all reputable manufacturers, this card is by Asante' Technologies...who ever the hell that is.

If this is a phoneline NIC, how are you using it to connect to your cable modem? I'm a little confused at the product details...but if it works with ethernet, it should be fine. The product description says that the max throughput is 1Mbps. If you have a connection higher than that, then I think you should get a new NIC that supports 10/100. It might get a better gaming experience, but it all depends on your cable company. If you have low pings, then that should be good enough for gaming. Hope this helps.

It does affect your gaming if your connection is capable of faster speeds than your connection. I am currently using onboard lan on my K7S5A and i get 2800kbits. With my NIC card installed, i get about 3800. I have tried my friend's 3com NIC and i got about 4300kbits. However, if your connection is just able to dish out 1000kbits, it wont really matter.

<< A better NIC will only decrease cpu utilization, it's very unlikely it would affect your pings. >>

thats what i thought

anyways i didnt know d.link was a reputable manufacturer 🙂

Asante IS a reputable name in the networking world.

Back to the subject, some NICs have lower CPU utilization but this only matters if you have a slower system. Ping times are determined by
your ISP's conection so I wouldn't worry about what kind of NIC you use.
