Does the PS3 60GB model play ALL PS2 and PS1 games?

Questions says it all. Even newly release games for the PS2? Also, does it play imported games? If it does, I think I'm gonna have to jump on the 60GB model.

Hmmm, I'm just asking because I never owned a PS2 and would like to get some PS2 fighting games. I like the odd ball games, so if there is a compatibility list, my games may not be on there. For instance with the 360, quite a few of my XBox games aren't on the list.

Ok, that's pretty good. Does that account for PS2 games that aren't even released yet? For instance, King of Fighters XI for the PS2 is coming out Oct 23rd and was wondering what were the chances it would work on the PS3.

You can't play the guitar hero games from what I know. But I think that'll change once Guitar Hero 3 comes out since I'd assume you can just use the GH3 guitar with GH2 (for PS2) on the PS3. Other than that, I don't know any other incompatibilities.

Ok, nice. Does the PS3 (60GB) basically have PS2 hardware built in?

The PS3 uses general-purpose emulation vs. the 360's miniports & per-game profiles.

You can run any PS1 - PS2 game you want, including new games on day of release, but there may be glitches.

PS3 60GB uses the GS + EE chips from a PS2 slim plus a little software, 80 GB uses just the GS chip plus more softeare. The new 40 GB drops the GS chip to cut costs and has -0- PS2 BC. (PS1 BC is done 100% in software now and is there even in the 40GB)

Database of known glitches: (PS1 ganes on 40GB should be same as on 80GB)

PS3 40GB has PS1 compatibility and just as much PS2 BC as the 360 🙂

PS3 80GB price is now $499 so if you want PS2 BC you can pay the extra cost for it, just like you pay extra for wifi ($100) and HD-DVD ($179) on the 360.

You do have to decide at the time of purchase with the PS3 though, unlike the 360's options.

Yep, the Sony brand cables are $40-50 for HDMI and optical digital cables. Isn't that also what MS is charging Pro users for the optical out adapter that ships free with the Elite?

And yes, if you don't mind an extra device, cables and wall-wart you can use a router / accesss point instead of the $100 snap-on MS wifi.
