Does the power supply have to be AMD approved?

under components and then cases cases

Part Number 100015 - Mid Tower ATX w/ 300 Power Supply and USB, Sound and Joystick ports on front of face plate

I like the looks of this case but it is NOT approved for AMD's. What is the difference, it's still 300W?

The 300W power rating isn't what qualifies a power supply from being AMD approved or not. I went through 2 cheap power supplies one being a CompUSA brand that only gave me trouble. Everything runs off the power supply, don't skimp on it.

Is it the quality of the voltage that AMD is looking for (lack of variations) or just the ablity to produce 300w. I probably won't come close to 300w.

i think it's the quality of the voltage/power supply but i dunno. if i were you, i'd get the case and buy a 300watt power supply that's amd approved. cause i agree, the case is pretty nice with the front usb/headphone jacks.

Another AMD PS question.

Just got an athalon 1.2ghz system today with a generic case. I asked the guy about the PS cause I was reading 300 here and there. He said it's a 250 and that it's fine for this setup. Is this true?

Yeah I'd like to know the same thing, I'm going to buy a 1Ghz Tbird and possibly overclock it to 1.2Ghz. I currently have a PIII system with a 250W PS. Will that work with the new Tbird?

AMD's are actually very stable cpu's. I had a power supply that made such fluctuations in power that you could hear the fans changing speed. Everyonce in a while it caused a black screen of death (a new kind of BSOD) that required shutting down the main power. Don't ask the vendor if it's AMD approved, I asked 3 from various places that all lied. Check for yourself. Sparkle is a good brand for PSU's. I'm using an Enermax 350W which is fine, but it's power button broke in the on position. No biggie, and they probably aren't responsible for it (probly made by another company).

250W is usally fine, its the quality of the voltage coming from the PSU that makes the difference, a cheap PSU can allow alot of noise into the the lines and that can end up causing problems.

The athlons are very stable cpus if you make sure you feed it clean power. Go get an enermax or sparkle. I have the enermax 330 watt dual fan and i love it.

It's not the total wattage or even just the wattage of the power supply alone.

AMD athlon power-
"To ensure reliable operation of AMD Athlon? Processor-based systems, an AMD-recommended power supply is required. Recommendations are based on the ability of a supply to provide the power sequencing and current requirements of AMD Athlon? systems. The current supplied on the +5VDC power rail as well as the combined current supplied by the +5-VDC and +3.3-VDC power rails has been tested on the supplies listed below."

A power supply can be 300 watts total and still not supply the needed current on the +5 and +3.3v rails which would lead to instability and possibly a non-running system. I'm not sure what the sequencing requirements are, but it would be safest to get a power supply that is AMD approved to be sure.
