Does the Post Office let you insure an item in an envelope?

I seem to recall them mentioning this to me once before, that items in a normal envelope cannot be insured.

Am i remembering this correctly?

I'm pretty sure you've got to ship it in a USPS priority envelope to have it ensured. Priority envelopes ship for ~$4.

I dunno, i've shipped items first class before and had them insured, i think it just can't be in a normal envelope...

Legal Letter sized envelopes cannot be insured I think

Insurance and Delivery Confirmation includes envelopes but USPS kinda requires it to be atleast 3/4 inch except flat rate
