Does the P4 / P4 Xeon support dual SMP platform.

I am having a discussion with my co-worker.

If I rmemeber right the arcitechure of teh P4 doesnt support SMP.. am I right. However supermicro has a dual P4 mobo...

what teh heck is going on..

as for performance I put a dual AMD ahead of a dual P4.. what do you think..

teh architecture itself supports it. The Xeon is basically just a P4 in different packaging, and the Xeon supports SMP. The P4 doesn't have a chipset around that supports SMP, however (at least not yet, and it's unknown if there will be one).

Intel has a number of roadmaps awhile back showing only Xeon systems with SMP support. Things certainly change on roadmaps, and I admit I'm not always up to snuff on this.

The P4 Xeon is intended for dual operation on the P4DC6, the motherboard which I will be using with mine. There are two other motherboards also avaliable, one a Tyan and the other Iwill. These processors specifically have DP in the model numbers and run only on I860 chipsets with 64bit PCI support. P4 is not dual capable, obviously so as to not compete with the flagship Xeon. The early P4 Xeon processors only have 256 cache at this time. If you examine the processors themselves you will see they are substantially differrent in architecture. P4 XEON uses a 603 pin socket.
