I dont know if the Nforce chipset supports P4's ... does it or does it not.

I am looking to build a few P4 based Linux workstations for development boxes. Otherwise i ahve to go with the regular P4 mobo..
question is that all i see is that mwave has a lot of P4-533mhz mobo's .. we dont need more than a 1.6A or a 1.8A.. but the 533mhz mobo's the proc's start at 2.0B and all....so whats the deal.

I was going the Nforce way cause i would rather have a geforce for display in linux than an ATI, plus a unifiedboard can keep things small and light.

No. B/C Intel wants to be too stingy/greedy with their licenses:| NVIDIA definitely has the knowledge/knowhow to do it (afterall, the XBox via a PIII on an nForce board).

ALi and SiS are no threats to Intel's chipset market...that's the ONLY reason why they have licenses for the P4. Given the nForce's superior design/features/onboard video, Intel simply doesn't want to get itself embarassed.

One even more perplexing matter is that even ATI has a P4 license...why not NVIDIA? I think Intel is just threatened by NVIDIA aka "Mini Intel"

Why not go with an athlon 1600xp and nforce or preferably nforce 2, instead of a P4? For the same money you could probably bump this up to around an 1800xp, and it will definetaly be upgradable in the future to 2500 or 2600. Save a little money, and no loss in performance. And from my understanding, nvidia develops a fairly good set of linux drivers for the nforce platform already. Nvidia Linux support

Exactly, I think Intel is a little nervous about the amount of chipset sales Nvidia could take from them, so they are jacking up the licensing costs.

nVidia ihas the same problem VIA has, Intel wont give them a licence at a reasonable cost. Such a Shame

:( Can't we all just get along? :D

I guess it really won't matter once Granite Bay and the consumer Intel DDR platforms get here (though they still will have crappy integrated video).
