Is only the X1950XT/Crossfire getting a new cooling system? Or does the new X1900XT 256 meg card get one too?

As loud as fans can get.
It's probably the loudest air cooler that I've ever heard, especally when turned all the way up.

However, at higher speeds it also does it's job very well and it'll be hard to find a cooler that can perform better then the stock one at full speed. It's a bit loud but if you can just ignore that one feature then it'll be great.

Or just use the ATI drivers with CCC and let the fan auto-adjust. Unless your room is really hot or your case cooling sux, it will barely be audible.

The fan on it's default settings never reaches 100% speed, so it's not so loud that it becomes intollerant. But it's still the loudest part in your typical system, to put it in perspective.

Isn't ATI allowing their card makers to come up with their own cooling options now?

180+ dbs jet engine fans? :D

This card can reach 60dbs at full load. The reason it annoys people is that it has a whiney peach to it, becauseit uses a small fan.

I dont think the XT comes with the new cooler, but if its a problem, the accelro X2 is always something to think about.

From everything I've seen, it uses the old crappy cooler. I'm glad ATI has at least started to retire that design...it was awful. It may cool well, but its plenty possible to create a design that does as well without being that noisy. I'd say the stock coolers have been ATI's biggest weakness versus nvidia.

You two must be "new school", because there are serveral PC fans that have been much, much louder than a XT fan. In fact, Ive still got my old FOP38 heatsink/fan combo, spinning at 6800rpm... and its only 60mm, now thats loud. ;) Even Tornado fans are much louder than the XT cooler at full blast.

60db? Ive seen them rated at 50dbs, the same as the 7900GT. Not that the XT fan every runs at full blast, unless you force it, besides the first few seconds on a bootup.

I had a tornado back in the day. It was about as loud as the stock x850xt. The trouble is the x850xt fan was also a different pitch then any of my other fans, making it stick out by far.

You're correct Ackmed, the X1K stock cooler is rated at 50db which only sounds like a jet engine to bats and dogs. The fact is that these things don't spin up much beyond 45% under load, and if it does then it's probably that your graphics card is already borked unless you forced it.

I was only joking if you didnt see the joke. Of course there are louder computer fans out there. But im referring to the ATi stock cooler being almost up there with the other noisey coolers. For reference people talking is about 40 dbs.

The XT stock cooler 100% fan speed is rated at 60dbs (when playing graphics intensive game of course). Of course its not on 100% fan speed or it wouldve been renamed dustbuster2 along time ago. Luckily the fan is pretty quiet most the time.

Its the pitch as PingSpike mentioned that is the most irritating issue. Small fan plus high RPM = :Q.

Computer fans can indeed go over 60dbs.

The stock x1900XT is comparable to noise levels to all the stock highend cards, the exception being the stock GF 7900GTX.

Some models are quieter in 2D mode and louder at full 3D load (7950GX2) and some models are louder in 2D mode and slightly quieter under full load (7900GT) in any event, a nice comparisn was done at X-bit labs a little while back that includes many current models.
