Does the media do a good job?

So a project I'm involved in made the front page of the local paper today. And the story is almost, but not quite completely wrong, right from the headlines on down :disgust:

This seems to be the case every time a story hits the news that I have the "inside" scoop on. And these are simple stories. No controversy/argument/etc. Makes me wonder about the coverage of the big complicated (and important) stories.

No, I don't trust the media to be accurate anymore. They are more concerned with subscribers, viewers and advertising revenue than they are the truth anymore.

Among other things. I truly believe that most journalists report with a bias that is part of an agenda making it damn near impossible to believe those who are not supporting an agenda.

No. When I've been interviewed, I've almost always been misquoted by the time it makes it to print, and when I'm familiar with what they're talking about, what gets written is not quite what happened.

Sometimes you can trace the flow of misinformation. When it comes to science or medical studies, most writers never read the original, they read what someone else reported on it. Usually earcly on in the chain, it gets completely misinterpreted and that misinterpretation then carries on through the rest of the media.

So are you involved in home construction or the petition to stop Wal Mart?

Nope ... my story didn't make the online edition apparently. It's about a website that I did the development for (see sig).

Don't be surprised to see a lot of cartoon names now registering for access. 😉

that's like asking "is the weather nice?"

it's such a broad question. magazines, tv, blogs, etc are all "media".
in some ways we're getting more accurate news reporting (compare embedded reporters now to WW2), but in some ways we're getting gossip columns masquerading as news (J Lo gets married!)

not surprising in the least. i was stuck in a dairy cooler by some robbers when i worked at winn-dixie, they robbed the safe of 30K+ and the paper said they just got into cash registers. you never know though, maybe thats all the store managers and cops told the reporter, who knows, but yeah it is so common for stories to be wrong or misleading.

they are sometimes accurate.

Compared to other countries, I am sure our media is excellent. However, compared to what it could and should be, it's miserable.
