bonus question: why is it called the pipe

Does it have to do with Unix? cause we used that character a lot to pipe output of a command to another....hopefully this makes sense, its been a while.

hint: it's not because computers started out in the 60s

Don't know. Just a stab in the dark, but maybe because it's used to pass results of one command to another? I thought of this due to linux. e.g. grep * | ls

well as the designated captain obvious...

answer: its a "pipe" because in unix shell | lets you pipe out put of commands to other commands. So say you have some text files and you're looking for something particular

cat * | grep stuff_you_need
this will print out the contents of all the files into the outstream and pipe it to grep that will only print several lines around the stuff_you_need

Using a UNIX shell (the UNIX interactive command interface), a pipe is specified in a command line as a simple vertical bar (|) between two command sequences. The output or result of the first command sequence is used as the input to the second command sequence. The pipe system call is used in a similar way within a program.
