Does the K7T-Turbo have a "4 phase power" system?

I've seen ABit talking about their 3 phase power system over most other people's 2....as far as I can tell the only difference is ABit uses 6 MOSFET power transistors instead of 4...

well I was looking at the K7T-Turbo review page 2 and it looks like there are 8 MOSFETs....does that make the K7T-Turbo a 4PPS ?

But each phase needs a coil - and there are only 3 coils. One is usually reserved for a seperate power supply e.g. AGP power.

I'd say that this was probably a 2 phase supply, just like all the other MSI boards.

Maybe they run them in parallel to reduce current flow through each one: Doesn't give quite as good overall performance as another pair of phases, but saves the cost of coils and keeps the switches just as cool.

I can't really think of why they might need 8 mosfets for a conventional 2-phase regulator.

So then do you figure that the K7T-Turbo can take the higher speed Athlons...I've been hearing rumours floating around that you'll need a 3PPS to support the 1.5Ghz Athlons...do you know if there is any truth to this rumour?

There are actually 5 coils on the MSI, three around the MOSFETs and 2 on top of the PCI slots. Dont know if that'll make any difference.

<< Everyone except for abit is still using 2 phase. >>

This hasn't been proven yet.

Its ridiculous to say that only ABIT uses a 3 PPS solution. Open your eyes, with KT133A 3 PPS is more common than 2 PPS.

does one need a special power supply?
is the new Pentium 4 12 volt type power supply needed for this?
will the new Pentium 4 power supply work with an AMD T-Bird?
what are the differences of requirements in the new DDR 133 [thunferbird (C)] ?

Here are the KT133A boards I know for sure:

3 PPS (phase power solution):
Epox 8KTA3
Abit KT7A

2 PPS:
ASUS

Don't know about MSI or others.

My understanding is that 2 MOSFETs = 1 phase. 6 MOSFETs = 3 PPS, 4 MOSFETs = 2 PPS.

There has been speculation that 2 PPS boards may have heat and power issues with Palmino and Morgan CPUs. No special power supply is needed, rather the 2 or 3 PPS has something to do with regulating the voltage to the CPU. More MOSFETS=less heat.

I am not an expert on this. Most of this information, while pretty accurate, has been drawn from other people like DaddyG and Dulanic on other threads.

Yikes...anyone know if this is true?

If it is, I might be getting the MSI K7T Turbo instead of the A7V133. :Q

The vote is split on that. Dulanic says no, DaddyG says yes. Both are respected members of the forum community. I think Asus' 2 PPS probably will handle the CPUs but I'm glad I don't have to worry about it.

"My understanding is that 2 MOSFETs = 1 phase. 6 MOSFETs = 3 PPS, 4 MOSFETs = 2 PPS."

Actually, you need a coil for each phase of a MOSFET power supply. There should be one coil per pair of MOSFETS. Just adding MOSFETS does not add phases without the corresponding coil.
