Does the iPhone deactivate?

I have to move to Sprint for the direct connect since that is what all my co workers have, and I am not willing to pay for unlimited minutes. But that is beside the point. My question is...if I quit my att service, can I still use the iphone as a itouch? Play my music and use the wifi for apps. Or does the phone deactivate and become a brick?

TIA

I think it will continue to work the same, just without the phone service until the next time you upgrade/restore the OS. Then you'll need to jailbreak or unlock it for it to be usable again.

I am not worried about using it for phone service again. I just want to be able to use it as a MP3/Video Player. Do I really need to jailbreak it to use it as a mp3 player?

My V1 seems to work just fine since I switched to a 3GS. No signal is the only thing. I haven't tried syncing. From what I understand all you have to do is remove the SIM card.
