Did you dig around for a later version than is on the MB CD or link from your model's download page? ASUS is not unique in being fairly poor at keeping the downloads up-to-date for all but the latest motherboards.

I would avoid it at any rate and use the DOS or EZ Flash methods.

EZ Flash methods?
I though that's what the online update was?

If you look at the ASUS forums, the experienced members there will tell you to avoid the in-OS BIOS update.

The EZ Flash utility can be done from the BIOS,

save the bios file to the flash drive (formatted to FAT / FAT32, not NTFS), name it something like

P5E.rom
(replace P5E with your mobo's model)

then reboot, enter bios, choose EZ FLASH utility, then pick your bios file and update from there.

It is also not recommended to use "Alt-F2 on boot" to flash.

I believe the reason for all of this is that doing it from the bios minimizes the chance that something can go wrong and leave you with a FUBAR bios.

You can also do this from a bootable floppy (DOS method) or even a CD-R (EZ flash method, I believe)

Do NOT use ASUS update.

Especially over the Internet.

Unless you MUST.

Almost every week someone here kills the board with that.

EZFlash or good old AWDFLASH with the floppy drive are the BEST methods.

the os one often worked for me, but sometimes it didnt... However it is a rather bad idea. I moved to 100% bios based flashing.

You download the BIN file, put it on a flash USB drive. press F-whatever to bring up EZ flash (or select it in the bios menu itself) and select the file, and then the bios updates itself within the bios, without any interference from the OS.

That is MUCH safer then the OS method which is usually problematic... and leaving anything to automatation (like choosing the right bios version) is not wise on a something as senative as a bios flash. I had one failed flash one an MSI (or maybe a gigabyte) OS update (recovered through bios flash) and a case when it downgraded my bios by accident on the asus os flasher... and then I had enough.

PS. the internet part is harmless. it downloads the file, checks its CRC, and then tells you the new and older version and asks if you are sure you want to proceed. At which point no actual changes were made, and the file is safely on your hard drive. So updating over the internet is fine.

My preferences in flashing:
BIOS flash > OS flash > floppy flash (I don't have a floppy in any of my computers, but I can plug one into an open box especially for a flash on the rare situation when its needed)

DO NOT USE ASUS CRAPDATE TO UPDATE YOUR BIOS!!!

It's well known to fuck up when flashing, & it cost me an RMA since at the time i didn't know better...:|

I agree with others as well. At the worst case, you should download the BIOS and flash the board locally, not over the internet.
