Does the i815E chipset work well under Linux (including the onboard Intel NIC)?

I have the CUSL2. I can't get Linux to install. Some said it's probs with the 815e chipset. Others said it may be a problem with the ATA100 controllers. Whatever it is, it hosed my system bad. I tried Mandrake (forget what version exactly). Ended up having to restore a couple of (Ghost) images.

If you want to play with Linux, an old BX system with ATA33 is best.

Noriaki - I'm going to try installing redhat 7 on mine this weekend. It's not mandrake but at least it's linux. I'll let you know the results if you like. There shouldn't be a problem with onboard nics in general as they tend to use very generic chipsets and all the server boxes with onboard nics I have installed linux onto have worked fine (combination of Intel and AMD onboard nics)

cool.
I know my Linksys NIC works from past experience, but it would be handy to have a 2nd NIC for internet sharing/routing etc.

true, a second nic is always handy. Besides that onboard VE nic is great, considering what you have to pay for an external version compared to getting it on the mobo. Why waste it 🙂
Anyway, I'll post the results here when I'm done.

I've seen kernel drivers for the 815's AGP slot, and I think Xfree86 has video servers available for the onboard graphics as well. That means at least somebody has gotten it to work. But then like Radboy said for the stability the 440bx can't be beat (not that it's really going to make much of a difference. I couldn't even crash linux on a Via MVP3 chipset without doing it on purpose. Mandrake 5.2 at that🙂).

Of course Slackware 8.0 just came out. It's not for everybody but I use it (well, not 8.0 yet) for my main workstation. For a remote-type console only box I REALLY think slackware or debian are the only 2 distro's to consider. I've to Slack 7.1 running on a Pentium 150 with 32mb ram and an 80mb (not a typo: 80mb) hard drive (with 33mb still free). That's a really customized and striped down setup though 😉.
