Does the hosts file trick still work in vista?

I recently bought a laptop with vista home premimum. I was using the hosts file trick to block ads on my xp desktop. And basically I was wondering if that was still safe to do or recomended or even possible. And if so, what do I need to do, because I remember having to also change some network setting in xp.

btw I searched hosts on the forums so sorry if there is already such a topic and I missed it.
