Does the Gamecube controller hold the system back?

I'm thinking about getting a Gamecube, but I have concerns about the controller. It seems like it would be awkward for a lot of games, especially fighting games with it's weird button layout. Has this been an issue for anyone? Or more importantly, WILL this be an issue down the road (I'm thinking Soul Calibur 2 here)?

its actually not bad. its sweet for metroid. tho it could use some straif buttons. and my bro has Bloody roar and its fine for that. only game it truly sucks for it Tony Hawk

Not a big fan of GC, but I did find controller horrendous, almost as sucky as the Dreamcast conroller. Maybe you can get a joystick (if they make any) for it. For some games, it's pretty good (Metroid Prime), but it definitely sucks for fighting games.

Gonad the Barbarian, just to add, that I've played Madden 2002 & NFL 2K3 on the GC and the controllers aren't too bad, better than a DC controller, but not as comfy as my PS2 controller, just my opinion 🙂

i had no prob playing tony hawk 3 with it.

In my opinion, its good for the party and fun games that Nintendo has going for it, but for fighting games? It sucks.

yeah the controller that they spent millions of dollars of research money on and came up with one that everyone hated and traded in for the japanese controller. it has buttons that arc'ed exactly opposite from the way your thumb arcs!

😀 I have both an X-Box and a Gamecube. I stand by my position that Sega always made the best damn controllers there are. I actually didn't mind the X-box controller much. I guess my hands are just the right size for the white and black buttons to be a bit too far away on the regular controller, and a little too close to my palm on the japanese controller.

Gamecube controllers do stink. Hopefully enough people will complain and maybe Nintendo will do some redesigning like they did with the GBA

I too have both an Xbox and GC...

The GC controller is good for platformers and the like. Basically where the right joystick is NOT a primary control and also where one button gets the vast majority of use.

Otherwise, I think it pretty much sucks. The Xbox "-S" controller, on the other hand, is like butter!

see the big difference in the black and white button placement? in the original they're too far away to be of any use.

the other prob with both xbox controllers (and this is the same complaint i had about my sidewinder gamepad back in 1997) is that the trigger button housing is right where i put my middle finger and its not something comfortable to hold onto.

those two buttons aren't used as much. you have the many trigger buttons on the back to keep you happy too.

The controller for the original Sega Master System (NES competitor) sucked. The joypad had a "stick" think that killed your thumb (thank got it screwed out), and the wire for it came out the side, so it'd be in the way of your left hand. Ghey.

I like the controller. The feel to the directional pads is nice, although it is just a little smaller than I would like, and I have large hands.

I find both controllers pretty good.

But with most problems with controls, I blame the games, especially those written by programmers who were too stupid and ignorant to add an option to reassign buttons.

FIFA 2003 for GameCube comes to mind. Idiot programmers pretty much reversed the functions of the button. So I press B to shoot and X to do the deep tackle. In FIFA 2002, X was shoot and B was deep tackle.

Ruined a game that otherwise offers a new interesting style of play.

<-- didn't buy FIFA 2003 after renting it once

WHAT? WHAT? I LOVE the GameCube controller. From an ergonomics standpoint, it's the most thought out gamepad EVER made! (I study ergonomics and natural body movement.) I can remember reading a while back that Nintendo spent some big money in the R&D of this controller. That doesn't necessarily make it good, but I've tried all the console controllers (XBOX S included) and I think the Cube controller wins hands down.

However, my ergo preferences aside, I have learned that while ergonomics are made for everyone, they aren't for everyone. I learned that from my pistol, the Steyr M40. Simply put, it's the product of an engineering madman/genious (former Glock man) and is the most ergonomically correct firearm I have ever encountered. The thought put into all aspects of this gun's design is absolutely incredible. It does not sell well, though, and many people hate it a LOT. One major problem is this--unless you have some knowledge of how the human hand is meant to grip objects, you may hold this pistol incorrectly, and subsequently shoot it poorly. It also lacks a true firing pin (striker in this gun's case) safety so many old timers won't touch it. This gun however has converted many 1911 .45ACP shooters, however, including a personal friend who was a sniper in Vietnam.

If you just don't think about the GameCube controller you'll probably use it better 🙂.

I maintain that controllers peaked with the japanese version of the saturn controller...
I personally find the layout of the controller really illogial and short on buttons - IMHO, the N64 was much better thought out and better to use.
