Does the father of the groom typically wear a tux at a wedding?

The father of the bride does because he's briefly IN the wedding (and the bride's family are the "hosts"), but what about the groom's father if he's not in the wedding at all?

my dad wasn't "in" the wedding, but yeah he still wore one. not sure if this is tradition, or what.

If it is a wedding after 6pm and you are a male, you wear a Dinner Jacket ( Tuxedo).

yes. if the father of the bride is, the father of the groom should.

my wedding was black tie, and we even had friends who weren't in the wedding wearing tuxes.

most other weddings i've been to only had the traditional "suit and tie" dress code -- and naturally, the groom and both fathers did not wear a tux.

it all depends on the wedding. still, i'd think it would be awkward if one father wears one while the other does not, regardless of being in the wedding or not.

In a typical traditional wedding, it is usually practiced for continuity of family members in photographs.

The rule of themb is generally that both fathers should dress equivalently.

All weddings are black tie if they are after 6pm unless you are told otherwise or simply don't know any better.

i've been to weddings that are after 6pm and they were not black tie. the invitation did not indicate that they weren't, either. usually, in my experience (and i've been to a lot of weddings), a wedding is formal, but not black tie, unless it says black tie on the bottom of the invitation, regardless of when the wedding will be held.

It's an afternoon wedding, and definitely not black tie... I wouldn't force my guests to wear something that I wouldn't want to wear to their wedding.

No one should wear a Dinner Jacket, which is evening wear, to ANY event in the afternoon.

But, that doesn't change social customs of what is appropriate to wear at weddings. It just means you and your friends ignore convention, not that you have changed it or discover a new paradigm.
You can look it up in any etiquette book worth reading.

If you are Royalty, you wear Court Dress, but can get away with White Tie these days.

And, "formal" means ?White Tie,? white waistcoats, tails, etc?

Black Tie and Dinner Jackets are really ?semi-formal.?

Tough.

Edit: No offense, but unless you are in an extremely pretentious social circle, you must realize by now that what you consider customary is the exception more than the norm these days.

I rented a suit for my sons wedding and I don't even own a tie;)

tuxes should only be necessary to match in the wedding party

My dad walked me in when I got married. He had a suit on, I had a tux. Worked fine.
