Does the DMV keep the title to your car?

My fiancee can't find her title... she thinks the DMV (here in connecticut) might have it... is that possible? I never heard of DMV's keeping the title of your car before....

No, if you are still making payments on the car then the lienholder (bank) would hold the title. If you own the vehicle outright then you should have the title.

The DMV would have to redo the title to relfect the new lender info, and she may not have gotten it back from them yet.

WTF...the bank doesn't care about registration...they want title...title doesn't prove your car is registered.

Call the DMV and ask them?

I used to work in automotive finance and some states use "paperless titles".

Exactly. In some states, the DMV gets notice of lien by a lienholder and they will hold title electronically. When lien satisfies, the DMV issues a paper title.

This is rare but I agree with you.

Why is it rare? I'm frequently right.

What does the title matter to DMV?

Seeing as it conveys ownership, I'd say it matters.

if she has a loan on the car, the person who fronted her the money may hold on to the title until the car is paid off

i think. ive never bought a car.

title is proof of ownership, why the hell would the dmv have it?

Because the title says who owns it, and who REALLY owns it.

Example, you own a car

Owner: Hardcore Robot
Lienholder: GMAC

If you owe a ****** ton on it, effectively GMAC owns your car. A paper title has absolutely no purpose when GMAC is holding title, so it is held electronically until ownership actually needs to be transferred. Otherwise, you're making a sheet of paper that has no purpose.

Nice choice of words from someone who's never bought a car.
