Does the company for which you work waste money on stupid things? Mine does...

We're upgrading all of our users to flatscreens. Let me tell you, there is no happier employee than one that has a brand new flatscreen on their desk. It makes them feel so freaking important... But its costing the company tens of thousands of dollars to supply each user with one.
Granted, they are cool, but let's take a look at the productivity charts before and after we spend this much money on the company see just how little a difference it makes. But hey... the cubes look cooler now.. go figure.
I guess thats number three on my list.
LCD's improve productivity in no way, shape or form. The way most people have their desks arranged it doesnt save much space either. Especially because its usually cheaper to get a bigger desk than a decent LCD.
But "OH, NO! New desks are a major investment. We cant go around replacing everybodies desk."

at the time i was working on contract to a company.

only people i had to report to was the head of IT and the owner. anyway they were trying ot cut cost (wich is part of the reason i was there) and they wanted to lay off at least %20 of the workers they had. So we had a meeting on who and how. Well after talking about that the next item was What cars they were going to buy for people in upper managment as a "bonus". They finally said they could choose the car they wanted but had to be from the same company with a max of $50k!

i was in shock. they were on the verge of bankruptcy and they were going to blow a few $100k on cars.

Are you one of the Bobs?

My company cracks me up too. We are a cargo airline, and we fly large aircraft that are expensive to operate. The maintenance dept. has a rather pathetic budget and can rarely fix any problems the first time because of shoddy tools, parts not being in stock, low manpower/expertise, etc. This means we have mechanical interruptions more than we should. Usually they happen while flying out somewhere, which causes us to turn around and come back. Every time this happens, it costs maybe $10,000 on fuel alone; not to mention we have to cancel a following flight so the current one can be re-attempted. No one makes a stink about this. This month alone (since Feb 1) We have had FOURTEEN flights return like this. FOURTEEN!!

Meanwhile the accounting department is cracking down on people pilfering paper clips and sticky pads.

Ahh.... management.

LOL, I feel ya man. At my last job they were ridiculous tight wads, I worked for a publishing company as a sys admin and we only bought educational software. We also had 2-4 in an office and we didn't have desks really, they were banquet tables with fold-out chairs. They had 1 color printer for the graphics department, but they didn't want to buy a new one, so they bought a used printer for $100 that wouldn't feed paper unless you handed it one by one right after another. They also decided that our data entry people were being hindered by their 1ghz workstations and in order to speed up the process they bought dual core P4's with 2gb of RAM and geforce 6800's so now they can open PDF's superfast! They've got $50k for useless computers but not $300 for a decent printer. Awesome.

Start your own companies and then do what you want. If you don't like it, find another job.

Precisely what I did. I work more than I used to though, but the money + freedom is nice.
