Does the brand of laundry detergent you use really matter?

I used to swipe detergent from my parents for years now, only using the premium brands such as Tide, but now have stopped said swiping. I use whatever brand i can get on sale, sometimes $1.99 vs. $6.99 for a brand name. Is there really a difference? I honestly can't tell but maybe I'm missing something.

Hmmm, what I'm thinking is that the cheaper brands may damage my clothes in the long run, but i'm not quite sure... Is there any reason to pay the premium?

the smell. I'm sure the boucne and all have stronger ingredients for that and maybe the cute bear parts make everythign fluffier...

i buy the bulk stuff from sears...gets like 300 loads from one box and its only like $10....never had any trouble with it "ruining" clothes....i mean so long as you put your bleach or your woolite for blacks or whatever in keeps colors good.

We use the cheap 40lb tub of detergent from Sam's Club. We don't notice a difference between that stuff and Tide/Cheer/whatever. Best of all, that tub lasts us 9 months with the toddler wearing cloth diapers - we do laundry almost every day. I imagine it would last a single guy 3 years.

I've never noticed a difference in effectiveness, but certain brands make scents that I like, so I'll go with them even if it's more expensive.

I found with Tide my clothes dont fade as much. Tide may be more expensive but since my clothes dont fade as fast its worth it.

you'd notice the difference when you wash by hand... the cheaper brands are less concentrated, thus you have to put more to get your clothes clean. you may not notice the difference when you just put it in a washer, but the difference is there.
