Does the Antec Sonata have usb 1.1 or 2.0 on the front? or does it depend on the mobo?

It is the case hardware that needs to be changed to support Usb 2.0. Contact Antec tech support (via email) and inform them of the case that you have and that you need the front Usb port upgrade to support Usb 2.0. They ship it out to you at no cost.

And yes the mb has to support usb 2.0 but most mb's support Usb 2.0

ditto

i called antec a few days ago and asked what USB the Sonata comes with and they said 2.0, and if the case should arrive from a reseller with less to call Antec and they will get them to you.

Why would the case matter? USB1 and USB2 use the same pinouts. The front case USB ports are just basically extentions.

Is there something tell-tale to distinguish cases that are updated and those that are not, a sticker or something?

Apparently the quickest way to tell is the date stamped on the inside bottom of the case. If it's not very recent, you have 1.1.

According to the rep, they haven't started equipping the supplies with SATA connectors yet, though might in the future. The Molex-SATA adapters seem to be unreasonably expensive. Does anyone know of a site that sells these for a price one would expect (meaning, not $10)?

I know that with the older Sonata cases, the front of door that opens is smooth. The newer one is a bit rougher.

I got the replacement ports from Antec for my Sonata.

The PCB has printed on it 'USB2.0' next to the USB ports. So just look for that.

Good to get the free port upgrade if possible.

However, I found that on my 2 year old Lian-Li case the front USB 1.1 ports functioned at 2.0 speeds when I installed my new mobo a few months back.

I bought a USB 2.0 flash drive and did a speed test comparing the speed of the front (USB 1.1) ports and rear USB 2.0 ports.
Data transfer speeds were essentially the same.

I posted the results here a month or two ago.

Call Antec and ask for it. The case is advertised as "USB 2.0" so if it is USB 1.1 they'll send you the replacement ports free.

The last 2 Antec power supplies I have purchased both had 2 Sata power connectors included (true 430 and 480).

That's good to hear, so perhaps the rep I spoke with was referring to the 380 in the Sonata, but it could be she was working with old information.

I ordered a Sonata from OfficeDept.com during the $70 coupon fiasco last week and mine HAS SATA power leads on the powersupply.

Plug a USB 2.0 device into the port and see what happens. Sometimes Windows will pop up a message saying "you have a hi speed device plugged into a non-hi speed port", if that doesn't happen, try using the port. If transfers (or CDr burning or whatever) are too slow that means it's 1.1.

I've heard that the USB 2.0 circut board has "USB 2.0" silkscreened onto it. Pull the bezel off and look for that.

Not sure if anyone cares about this anymore, but I just bought a Sony MicroVault thumb drive, which is apparently USB 2.0 only. I plugged it into my Antec Sonata case's front ports, and it didn't even notice the drive was there. Worked fine on any of the rear ports though.

I read this and other posts about the problem and called Antec at 1-888-542-6832 for the replacement part for the front panel ports. The person on the other end knew about it, and was quite pleasant. She apologized for the inconvenience, and said I must have gotten "old stock." I'm assuming the new Sonata's have the "fixed" part. I got mine last June. I got the new part in about 3 days by USPS.

I thought the same thing as syberscott about USB 1.1 and 2.0 pin outs being the same, so I wasn't sure exactly what they could have gotten wrong with such a simple part. All I can say is that I put the new part in and USB 2.0 devices now work like they should when plugged into the front panel. (I.E., The thumb drive is recognised as a USB hard disk.) The part replaces all of the ports under the little silver door (since they are all on one small PCB). On my case, they used some plastic caulking/glue to hold the connectors onto the PCB. This was easy to peel off though, so getting the connectors off was easy. Two plastic tabs/clips hold the PCB in place and removing and installing was straightforward. As an FYI, the part I removed also had USB 2.0 silk-screened on it as did the new one I put in. The new one had the USB 2.0 in a different place and the traces were definitely different.

hrmm...just yesterday i was attempting to use a CompactFlash card reader via my front usb. winxp would detect it as a removable storage device, but when i tried to access it, explorer would lock up. I was assuming that i had connected one of the pins incorrectly, and that's why i was getting the lock up, but maybe it's because i have a 1.1 port.

anyone have input on this before i crack the case open and check it out?

p.s. the card reader worked fine in the rear usb ports.
