It doesn't stand for anything anymore I don't think.

DVD once stood for digital video disc or digital versatile disc, but now it just stands for DVD -- the next generation of optical disc storage technology

I've seen it defined both ways, but I think "digital versatile disc" is more accurate, considering DVDs are being used more for storage, like Xbox games, instead of just video.

This a question for the ages. I've never found a definitive answer although I think it's Versatile since DVD is used for more than Video.

well it sure as hell isn't video, it can store video, music and data. It's a versatile disc. Go to www.dvd.org and prove it to yourself.

I can't find a definition of the acronym anywhere on that site.

My guess:

Used to be video until somebody started saving other files on them, then it became versatile.

It stands for Digital Versatile Disc. I remember reading it before they ever became available about 10 years ago.

BTW, I think dvds are crap. Portable media should not be copy-protected - and it should not require a clean-room to keep from scratching.

Its really, Digital Versatile Disk.

There are 5 standards for the DVD format, videos being the most popular.
