Try comparing the 9800Pro , the 9800pro AIW, and the 9800XT. The two Pro card are listed as having DDR2.. but the XT card is listed as DDR1. 😕

It allows for higher clockspeeds, which increases performance in theory. Only the 256MB cards are 256MB though, as stated above. Although because the 256MB cards aren't clocked that much higher, it doesn't really make much difference.

It says the 128MB 9800Pro and 9800XT have DDR-1, the 256MB 9800Pro as having DDR-2, which is correct.

of you check again, you will see that the 9800XT has only DDR1. Why is this?

I think it is because DDR II gets VERY HOT atleast this stuff does. MAybe they figured it wasn't worth it yet. Im sure once they get cooler running ram they will all have it but I would bet it is a heat issue.

Probably heat/availability. I doubt it's cost, as the XT is stupidly expensive anyway.
When you can get DDR-1 that's pretty much as fast as DDR-2, then why bother with DDR-2.

I think it is cost. Why use more expensive DDR-II when you can use DDR-I and pocket the savings?

The same could be said of the 9800Pro 256MB though. They use DDR-2 on that. Why bother there? The speed isn't that much faster than DDR-1.

I thought that Anand had said that the DDRII they using only uses DDRII's signalling conventions or something and isn't quad pumped like real ddrII.

 

I second the opinion that heat is the real problem. Even if you can squeeze more performance out of DDRII, oems have specificatons for the heat output of cards. Look at many dells, they have only one ducted case fan that acts as the cpu fan too.
