all durons have the same core(all thunderbirds have the same core(thunderbird) and all copermine p3's have the same(coppermine) core all katmai p3's have the same core(katmai)) what you are talking about is YIELD and all durons should overclock about the same.

So if you get a 600 duron your chances of getting to 900 are the same as a 700 and up??

I had two 600's hitting 1 gig+, the third one could go only upto 980..This is without any fancy cooling. I had used the coolermaster 6H11($17 or so)..

Mustanggt,
It was posted in Hot Deals yesterday. The $65 retail boxed Duron 650 is at lynncomp.com I ordered it last night and see that it was shipped today. I never used lynncomp.com before but they look to have a ok reseller rating. Their website kinda sucks as I wasn't sure the exact amout for shipping, but it looks to be about $10 for UPS ground.

From the website:
AMD Duron 650Mhz Processor in a Box with 3 year AMD warranty
Old Price: US 99.00
Price:US 65.00

The only thing to consider about a retail boxed cpu if you"re overclocking: getting that factory heatsink off.
Never have tried it but have read lots of posts where people have problems. They are put on to stay apparently.
Maybe someone else can comment who has had some experience with removing the stock heatsink.

cdrakejr, I may be wrong but I believe the retail Duron comes with the heatsink unattached in the box, it just snaps on I think.

KBtrade, you are right, the retail box comes with the heatsinks unattached in a separate compartment. What cdrakejr might be saying is that if you put the retail heatsink on and run for a few days, then it might become difficult to remove it when the cpu is cold because the thermal tape attaches very firmly. What you could do in this case is to run the computer at slightly higher voltage to warm it up, shut it down and remove the heatsink before it has a chance to cool down..
