Does the 4790K makes the 4690K somewhat pointless?

The one component that is questionable in the OP is the $100 H100i cooler. You can easily max out the i5 4690K on a $40 cooler -- Thermalright True Spirit 140, 140 BW, or Thermalright Macho 140.

You can get so many beastly coolers for $40-50 that frankly it is the $100 AIO CLC systems that look like money wasted:

$55

Scythe Mugen 4 is also an awesome performer for way less than the H100i:

Z board can be found for less than $100, I don't see many 4790K buyers to worried about going for even cheaper alternatives,

Its not only the cost difference between the Z board and Non-Z board, but the fact that Intel has gotten pretty much all the low hanging fruit with the i7-4790K and stock cooler as well.

So any overclocking beyond the i7-4790K stock clocks would entail not only buying a Z board, but an aftermarket heatsink as well.

I'm limited by my Hyper 212+ for my overclock. I'm not saying I want to get a better cooler for 200-300 more MHz, but I am very happy with my 4690k and temperatures in general.

If I got a better cooler, I would be able to hit 4.7-4.8 GHz, but the massive voltage increase is not worth it IMO. I like my $23 cheap cooler :)

I wonder what happens if Intel releases a fast clocked Core i5-K (4+ GHz like the i7-4790K)?

Do Z boards still continue to sell in appreciable numbers?

Or do a lot of overclockers move over to Haswell-E (specifically i7-5820K)?
