Not the one that comes with Gran Tourismo 3...just the basic blue one.

If you have a Costco membership you can get the PS2, 2 controllers, a mem card, and 2 games for $300 USD.

I have wanted a PS2 since the day it came out at $300. I refused to pay this price. But now since the XBOX has a $200 price tag with two games, better graphics, hopefully a better library coming this holiday season, I think I will be asking for an XBOX instead of a PS2 for christmas.

That's good to know, too bad none of the XBox games are any good ;)

Shamus has an XBox, so far the only game I've found on it that I particularly like is Halo, and while I admit it's plenty of fun, I can play it at Shamus' place.

There are at least 15-20 PS2 games I'd like to own right now...and a few just around the corner, along with full compatibilty with my PSX games. Not that that's a big deal, but it's nice to not have to connect to consoles.

So my choice is pretty easy for me, not that I have anything against the XBox...it's all about the games to me, and PS2 are the where the games I want are.

I agree, the X-Box will be around a while. Much better engine

XBOX will also stay "current" for a while with the specs it was built with.

Specs don't matter when you don't have any games.

exactly...

remember when PS1 were fighting with Saturn? I think Saturn had better 'specs' but they failed.

Indeed.

Which is why I'm going after PS2, it has more games that I want.
Halo is the only XBox title that really interests me.

XBox is better hardware than PS2, no question about that. But hardware specs are meaningless to me when it comes to Consoles.

But lets not turn this into another XBox vs PS2 thread, we have plenty of those.
Lets just all agree that everyone has their own preference and leave it be at that :)

Exactly...which is why games like:
Splinter Cell
MGS2: Substance
Rallisport Challenge
Morrowind
Deathrow
DoA3
PGR
JSRF (included with system right now)
Sega GT 2002 (included with system right now)
and yes...HALO

mean the Xbox DOES have a library of excellent games, RIGHT NOW!

And let's not forget the UNQUALIFIED SUCCESS of Xbox Live.
Playing games via Live is FANTASTIC, which for Xbox RIGHT NOW includes:

MechAssault
Ghost Recon
Unreal Championship
MotoGP
Sega's 2K3 sports titles (except for NCAA)
Whacked! (j/k...that one sucks ass :p)

Splinter Cell and MGS2: Substance - Also on PS2 (this isn't meant to be a PS2 is better than XBox comment...just an observation as I look over the games on your list. I'm always open to reasons why I might like the XBox enough to purchase one).

Rallisport Challenge - Wow...gets a 9.2 from IGN. Nice. Rally Fusion: Race of Champions on PS2 gets a resonably respectable 8.0, but XBox also has a "Rally Fusion" (without the Race of Champs subtitle) that scored 7.8, and both systems have Colin McRae Rally 3 coming out...who knows if that'll be any good though. It's got GT3 ASpec to compare to, but it seems if you are big fan of Rally style, this may just be the game for you. Gotta give XBox a solid point in the rally racing I think.

Morrowind - I'm sure we all know what Morrowind is, and ignoring PC from the comparison, this is a good title PS2 doesn't have.

Deathrow - This actually looks really cool, I've never seen or heard of it before, but it looks like loads of fun and also gets a 9.3 at IGN.

DoA3 - Worth an honourable mention for sure, weighing it at 9.4 on IGN. PS2 can answer with the Tekkens, the latest of which also scores in the 9s...an even 9.0 IIRC. The one I'm really waiting for in the fighting Genre is Soul Calibur 2, which should be on both systems.

PGR - Not bad I'm sure, but the street racing Genre belongs to GT3 ASpec IMO.

JSRF (included with system right now) - Seems a little bizzarre to me...but the guys at IGN seem to quite like it to, and can't complain too much when it's included with the system.

Sega GT 2002 (included with system right now) - Also looks pretty good, but once again I've gotta play the GT3 ASpec card :p I hate to keep bring it up, but really..it's GT3...it's hard to ignore, especially with a 9.8 from IGN.

and yes...HALO - Absolutely no argument there. Easily the best FPS since Halflife....possibly even better, but lets not open that can of worms :p It's enough to make me reconsider my stance that FPS gaming without a keyboard and mouse sucks :)

I've got to admit, even being somewhat biased towards the PS2, that is a pretty impressive list of games.
GT3 ASpec is the only racing game I'll ever need ;) but there are some very good racing games for XBox as well, particularly Rallisport Challenge. And this Deathrow game looks really cool.

And let's not forget the UNQUALIFIED SUCCESS of Xbox Live.

While I'm sure that's true, one of the best things about Consoles is that you can play multiplayer with a bunch of your friends in the same room, rather than just over the net. If you just want to play with people you can't see over the net you might as well use a PC. But maybe I'm just outdated ;)

You definately have some good games on that list though, and no mistake.
For my part, a few of the games that really interest me from the PS2 side of the fence,
GT3 ASpec
Grand Theft Auto III (also on XBox) and Vice City (not on XBox)
Devil May Cry (and a soon to come sequel)
Soul Reaver 2
Final Fantasy X (and possibly a follow up, the first ever in the final fantasy series)
Contra: Shattered Soldiers, maybe I'm just old school, but I'm really looking forward to playing this one.
Red Faction and RFII, but I have to admit, they are not as good as Halo.
Tekken 4, though Soul Calibur 2 is the one I'm really looking forward to in this area, it's also on XBox so :p

There are some others, but I'm trying to avoid ones that are on both Systems, since they can't be considered in decided which system to buy ;)

(Please note for the official record I'm not trying to start a PS2 is better than XBox war, I'm just listing off some of the PS2 games that I think are worthy of having as well.

Maybe I'll just have to buy an XBox as well :p

If they tried to make Splinter Cell for PS2, it would be such a sad, painful joke.

No argument on that point, the Gran Turismo series has ALWAYS 0wn3d!

The only reason I point out the Xbox street racing titles is that they *are* good games, and do show that the Xbox has a wide library of different genres represented.

GT3 ASpec
EXCELLENT...and has no peer on ANY platform
Grand Theft Auto III (also on XBox) and Vice City (not on XBox)
Actually GTA series is only on PS2, as far as consoles go. Killer app, fer sure
Devil May Cry (and a soon to come sequel)
Never played, but heard VERY good things about it
Soul Reaver 2
Played Soul Reaver on DC. Pretty game...not my cup of tea tho
Final Fantasy X (and possibly a follow up, the first ever in the final fantasy series)
Xbox is VERY light on RPGs, and nothing along the lines of FF-type RPG yet. But Morrowind and Baldur's Gate are both excellent D&D style RPGs
Contra: Shattered Soldiers, maybe I'm just old school, but I'm really looking forward to playing this one.
Never played it old-school...but I can't recall any 2D shooters on Xbox (???)
Red Faction and RFII, but I have to admit, they are not as good as Halo.
Much like you did with A-Spec, gotta play the Halo card. For me...the strength of the story was what did it. And because I was COMPLETELY engrossed in that excellent story...I didn't notice the reuse of levels (which I honestly think was a conscious decision on Bungie's part to further the storyline, not to save on development time as some folks often suggest).
Tekken 4, though Soul Calibur 2 is the one I'm really looking forward to in this area, it's also on XBox so :p
T4 is an EXCELLENT fighting title, but you're right...Soul Calibur II....Mmmmmmmmm
There are some others, but I'm trying to avoid ones that are on both Systems, since they can't be considered in decided which system to buy ;)
Sometimes tho, non-exclusives can, since one particular platforms version may suck more than another version for a different platform (port-itis)
(Please note for the official record I'm not trying to start a PS2 is better than XBox war, I'm just listing off some of the PS2 games that I think are worthy of having as well.
I am AMAZED at how refreshing it is to calmly and rationally discuss the highs and lows of each respective system with someone without a bunch of jackasses saying "You suck. Well, you're gay!"
Maybe I'll just have to buy an XBox as well :p
Here are some other reasons:

Halo2 (will include Live MP modes... :p)
Soul Calibur II (I truly think it will be done best on Xbox)
Ninja Gaiden (OHMIGOD THIS WILL BE SWEET SWEET CANDY!)
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Take 1 part BioWare RPG + 1 part Jedi goodness. Mix well. Bake @ 350. Serve HOT!!!)
Panzer Dragoon Orta (How about THAT for old-school shooter...heh!)
PSO (Online RPG)
DoA4
Starcraft: Ghost (YES!!!!)
Perfect Dark: Zero (DOUBLE YES!!!!)
DoomIII
Deus Ex 2

and for me personally...Crimson Skies (huge fan of that from the PC...lookin forward to new storyline and missions, and squadron play via Live)

BTW:If you appreciate old-school gameplay...don't miss:
Gunvalkyrie - SO TOUGH, but SO BEAUTIFUL! (check IGN's review)

Actually, I think the conversation has been remarkably civilized, as far as console game comparison threads go.

It always helps if both sides admit the high points of the "other" system, and the "lows" of their own system.
They both are great system so get both. :p
If the price dropped to $150, I'd prolly pick up a PS2, to be able to play many of the titles Noriaki mentioned. :D

Says it's coming to PS2, just not here yet...but that is a few month old, so maybe you're right.

Really? Hmmm...now I'm curious...any particular game you can recommend? I don't have an XBox myself but Shamus does, complete with XBox Live I think.

Grand Theft Auto III (also on XBox) and Vice City (not on XBox)

Ahh yes upon closer inspection you are right. I saw GTAIII on the Xbox list, but it was just some news bits, collections of rumours about GTAIII coming to XBox, and Rockstar making a statement discrediting the rumours.

Red Faction and RFII, but I have to admit, they are not as good as Halo.
Much like you did with A-Spec, gotta play the Halo card.
Absolutely, I have to give you that. Red Faction and RFII are good games, but they are certainly no replacement for Halo.

Sometimes tho, non-exclusives can, since one particular platforms version may suck more than another version for a different platform (port-itis)
That's a very good point, and something I had forgotten about. It may suck on one console and be good on another.
And as much as I don't care about hardware specs on a console, since it's all about the games, I have to admit assuming equally talented programming teams, the XBox has a better shot at having the better implementation since it's got more hardware to work with.

Halo2 (will include Live MP modes... :p)
Definately got me droolin ;)

Soul Calibur II and SC:Ghost are the other two bigs ones on the new list I like, also on PS2...guess we'll just have to see which version turns up better ;)

And Perfect Dark: Zero...gotta give XBox that one. I thought that was going to be on GameCube, that is going to be one sweet game.

Oh yeah, I wanted to mention Shinobi. It looks like it should be pretty good...the commercial annoys the hell out of me, but it looks like it should be a pretty good game.

And I really didn't mention that the Xbox has always offered excellent multi-player options. It has 4 controller ports built in (no multi-tap needed). The built-in Ethernet port means that in some games, you can use multiple Xboxs for even more players, either using a System Link cable (really just a crossover Ethernet cable) or using a hub/switch and standard Ethernet cabling.

Mech Assault 0WNZ on XBL! And up to two folks can play Mech Assault via a single XBL Gamertag. The 2nd person simply shows up as Gamertag's Friend.

Yep...since MS bought Rare, all the Rare properties became Xbox-exclusive.

Now...here's a question:
How brilliant of a move on MS' part would it be if they released a Live capable version of Halo 1 NOW (or, at least very soon)?
You think XBoxen and Live Kits are flyin off shelves now? WOWSA!!! That would be KILLA!!! :D

BTW: If you do think about scoring an Xbox, be sure to check out the BIG LIST - Xbox Deals thread over in AT's Hot Deals forum.

BTW2: If Shamus is lookin for some XBL competition, have him submit his Gamertag to the BIG LIST - Xbox Live Gamertags thread right here in ATOT.

BTW3: [/shameless plug mode] :p

Anyways, Splinter Cell was going to be across all platforms, but became an XBOX (and PC) only title about a month ago.

Keep in mind tho, that MA is more action oriented, which means:

* 3rd person POV
* No mech customizations
* Streamlined heat management (better, IMHO)

That being said...the SP missions in MechAssault are excellent in their own right.

Yep...the developers are saying that PS2 and GameCube don't have the horsepower to run it, mainly the extremely complex lighting system, which is INTEGRAL to gameplay.
