Does that look like $125 worth of wire?

Negative battery cable for 1998 F150 4.6L 4X4, dealer wants $239, aftermarket $125

Bought a universal from NAPA for $16. I'm going to lop off the battery clamp and put on one of those ones made for car stereo setups with a connection for the 4 Ga. plus one 8 Ga. Now I'll need a 8" pigtail of 8 Ga. with a 10mm ring terminal and another 20" of 8 Ga. with 10mm ring terminals on both ends. I bet all told will be less than $40.

Um no it doesn't lol. IF you don't buy a "stereo" cable you can get it even cheaper. You can find all kinds of generic cables in the off road section. Likely could build that for $20...

--edit--

I am pretty sure you could get a generic 4GA battery lead with a ring and clamp that has the whip up at the top by the clamp and a 8 GA lead with rings on each end just hanging on the peg. Which part of it is bad? If it is the battery end, grab a generic clamp and lob of that part leaving the existing (what looks like) starter to engine ground, put the new ring under the existing one.

Like the last 4 inches of the 4 Ga. wire that goes down by the starter. Pretty badly oxidized and brittle.

They had a battery cable with a little whip that came off the battery clamp that terminated in a barrel clamp, but it was only 12 Ga. I thought this is no time to cut corners and start a fire. The little whip at the top goes to the firewall and the little whip at the bottom (8 Ga. also) goes to the frame.

Good thing you didn't see the Monster Cable version of this before you posted. It comes in its own little suitcase and the cable is wrapped in a genuine Snuggie® for extra insulation on those cold mornings and costs $850.

I would prob get 2 of the preringed 8 guage cables and the battery lead then. Back off the nut on the clamp, put the ring on there and tighten it to the battery. Then stack the 2 on the bottom. Before I would spend $125...

I you were really worried about putting the second ring on the battery clamp you can also run both 8ga to the starter bolt.

Reminds me of the auto transmission cable for the old F-body Camaros. All of about 3' long, fitting swaged on either end, and the dealer wanted $100 for it! Ended up getting one out of a junk yard for half that price, and even that was a rip-off. 🙄

Totals

$16.29 55" universal battery cable (NAPA)
$19.08 battery clamp and 4 terminal rings (CarTunes)
$2.72 4 feet of 8 gauge stranded wire (Home Depot)

$38.09
