Does That "Free Cable" Trick Work?

Well, I'm having a comcast installer coming in tomorrow to give me digital cable.

In the movie cable guy, they talk about asking the installer to give free channels for giving him some "tip"

Does this trick actually work? ...

Give it a try and get back to me in 10-20. 😉

Seriously, I doubt it, unless you get a cable guy with low morals.

No, Your digital cable is controlled from the office of comcast only the office can add or subtract specific channels. You could try a blackmarket box to open those channels but I would not recommend it as digital cable is 2 way and comcast could that thier box is not connected and another type of unit is.

Do they make a digital cable descrambler, i thought that they haven't made one yet.

I have seen ads for them but I wouldnt trust them unless I knew someone who had one first. Your looking at around 200 bucks and a no return policy in most cases. Even still digital cable is 2 way and if the ESN does not match you are owned.

In the old days, the analogue systems had filters (often) installed at the customer side (maybe at the box just outside your home) to scramble the signal. You could just remove those (or the installer could forget to install it) and get the channels.

The cableco programs the digital boxes and they have 2way communications so the installer guy is not going to be able to get you free channels. There is a device on ebay, that supposedly blocks the return path, but there were news stories (a few mo's ago) on how after a month or so the signals were received from the cable co and the customers ended up w/ large bills... and some legal problems. The devices didn't do what they needed to, and/or after a month or so the box shuts off if it can't get thru. When cable co comes out to fix or you want to replace it, etc, you pay $$$.

One time, a neighbor of mine was having cable installed. The cable guy offered to get him some extra channels, etc. the neighbor asked if he could come back later. When he did, the cable guy found out he offered extra channels to a cop... and was busted. (That was in the old days mentioned in first paragraph).

Let me know if it works, heh. I am moving in august and the new place will need cable installed, we'll try it if it works.

Yup, you can't get free dgital cable. The filters block the outgoing feed, which if the cable company does recieve will probably flag your account and send an installer over. There is no way to erase the memory, so if you remove the filter, all you orders will be sent...

our cable company installed ours last year, they gave use 3 months of all channels at the price of the regular digital basic. well, its been over 14 months and they still have not shut it off. (knocks on wood)

Analog cable - easy to "hack." Digital cable- currently impossible.. Filters let you order ppv, adult, etc. but eventually the cable co. will either shut down your box or pay you a visit.. You can use analog boxed in digital cable areas (most of the time - not 100% this applies to all areas).. Then you'll get all of the analog channels..

the fileters on the digital boxes that let you order ppv for free doesn't work. The box stores information on that stuff and when it doesn't get a return confirmaton from the cable co, it keeps trying.

Dunno about whether it's analog or digital (sounds like analog for me, from rading all the other posts), but it worked for us, with HBO, Showtime, and Cinemax . . .. 😉

When I had cable internet installed last summer the guy hinted that he could hook me, or any of my friends, up in the future.

I wouldn't bother. Unless you get a cable guy with low morals, you're more likely to get in trouble than anything. Further, don't buy one of those cable descramblers, you'll end up having to pay for everything you watch with it anyway.

"You're offering me a bribe. What you have just done is illegal, and in this state if convicted you could be fined up to $5000 or spend six months in a correctional facill-liaty"
