I hate it when they show a person playing video games and you hear Atari or NES sounds in the background when they are playing an X-BOX or Playstation.

God, I hate it when they depict computers. They're all running some fancy custom GUI and I'm like why the hell would build a fancy GUI for something like that.

Fancy GUI + beeping noises. That or just typing one line to write a whole new program and GUI. lol

I'm personally more annoyed by the psychobabble that shows like Criminal Minds spew out, but that's just me. The computer stuff can be irritating as well, but at least it's usually not completely central to the story...unless you're watching Swordfish, in which case you should try to just focus on all the pretty people.

I've read that current dumb juries are expecting real prosecutors to pull this type of magical evidence out of their asses in court cases. A local assistant DA in my home town told me that some of his colleagues have taken it upon themselves to first educate jurors in certian cases about the limitations of the technology before presenting the real evidence. Kind of a de-CSI'ing of their expectations before showing them real scientific evidence that does not light up and show "MATCHES".

If the CSI shows are a reflection of real life, no murder or crime would go unsolved.

remember that scene in hackers when the code is projected on that dude's face. that could not happen in real life. get over it, it makes for easy tv.

haha my GF uses an email client called IncrediMail, and it beeps every keystroke. It's really freaking annoying. I ask her time and time again why she doesn't disable it.

"I like it"

on one show, wasn't even a crime or techie show. Dude was editing a picture, he double clicked on the person in the middle and it masked them out perfectly in 1 second, and showed what was behind the person totally intact. That's bad ass! I spend hours masking an imagine in PS 7, and never does it come out that good, and I can never see what was behind the person it's always a solid outline of the person for me :(

some of the stuff i see on shows like NCIS makes me sick... some of the stuff they do on the computers just seems so far fetched.

i reckon that you could probably do most of what they actually do on the show in real life, only that it'd take a whole lot longer and be kinda boring. the producers obviously spruce up the GUI's, make the processes appear quick and stuff like that to make it more viewer friendly so that A)a viewer can actually understand what is going on B) the viewer has something nifty and interesting to look at (instead of just lines of code or numbers) and C) have a process time that fits in with the shows 45-50min length.

its all about giving the viewer what they want, rather than being super accurate. i dont wanna see some nerdy guys staring at lines of code and IP addresses, i wanna see pauly perrette bash random keys very fast and manouver around some funky graphical UI while she matches half a finger print to some random dude in a database whilst McGee bashes random keys even faster in his attempts to track a suspect via the resonance of their shoes on one screen and hack the united states on the other. its all hilariously OTT, but thats what i want.

Facial Recognition is legit, I know a dude who was kicked out of a Casino years ago and told to never come back. He returned like 3 years later and withing 3 minutes security was excorting him out. I don't watch Las Vegas so I can't comment on that show, but facial recognition systems/software are uber scary how well they work.

best one actually in NCIS was the one where they had two college kids go missing.

then one of their friends hacks in NCIS and starts a messenger like program that speaks out what it types in that microsof mike type voice. wtf, as if its that easy for them break into a federal computer system and even more WTF at the fact they arent even bothered that its happening.

then McGee makes a bunch of blunders trying to track the hackz0r d00d through tracing IP's and then suddenly has a brainwave to look for the missing marines (or whatever they were) Dell Axim X5 which at this point has apparently been left on and connected to a WiFi hotspot for about 5 days. then we see McGee rushing round campus tracking this Dell Axim on his PDA which sports some awesome looking 3d gui bollocks and is pointing out radar style exactly where the dead guys PDA is. just wow.

i have a dell Axim X51v and well if you leave it on it'll shut itself down to conserve power within a few moments, if you happen to be keeping it active the battery wont last more than handful of hours with the wifi turned on. complete bogus. id love a PDA as potent as that with 5 day battery life whilst using WiFi

I remember that episode. I love NCIS. But yeah, super clear maginification of a picture is what irks me the most.

yeah apart from those moments...NCIS is an entertaining watch. all the actors are pretty good, the guys who play Dinozzo, Gibbs and McGee are pretty good and the whole cast seem to have great chemistry and just seem to click with each other on screen.

i cant watch CSI, for some reason i just cant sit down and pay attention to it for more than 5 minutes. i dunno why.

It used to, but at some point I just figured that stuff isn't central to the plot so I just ignore them.

My top tv/movie tech-peeve is definitely the ability of some 'brilliant' computer person to hack into any system anywhere in just minutes. Encrypted? No problem, we'll just get around that. Firewalls, security software? Naaaah, not an issue. Hold on, let me just hack into this ultra secure super duper secret NSA database, gimme about 2 minutes. I'll download the 40 GB file with all the important secrets and load all the data into my analysis software in 30 seconds flat.

The second one has to be the ability to zoom in without pixelation -- on any picture, no matter the quality.

Finally there's always the "let me run this DNA against the database... ding... we have a match, it's Bob Smith's DNA!". Umm, yeah ;)

I don't remember that episode of BPS.. was that before or after someone caught him in a compromising situation and was stuck in a moral dilemma of what to do about it? :p

One of the reasons I don't watch CSI or those investigation shows. The only one that I really watch that does this quite a bit is Numb3rs. They slather it up with some fancy theoretical math theorem which I know nothing about so I can tolerate the stupid software with these intense 3d graphics they just whip together in 5 minutes. As long as Charlie comes out with something to the equivalent of the African Swallow theory, it's entertaining for me. I'm sure it drives math majors nuts though!

Speaking of Transformers, how about Anthony Anderson rigging what looked like an Apple IIe to communicate via Morse Code to the Department of Defense in about 90 seconds?

Numb3rs drives me nuts too, and I'm not a math major:

"Three hundred people were assaulted in a city of 14 million yesterday"
"We can use the theorem of probabilistic incomprehensibility with the Johnson algorithm. We'll factor in all the information we have on all the crimes over the past 30 years, and use my flux capacitor inhibitor software to quickly determine who the next victim will be, and exactly at what time it will happen. That way, the feds can show up there at just the right time to arrest the perp."
"Nice work Charlie, get on it."

One more thing about CSI type shows, It really gets my goat when the police detectives play such a small role in the cases.
