Does T-bird still consume as much as Athlon classic?

The durons and T-Bird use less power than than the original Athlon but you still need a good PS. Its not true that the reason you need 300w PS for Athlon because the Athlon uses alot of power, its because 300w PS's are usually higher quality than 250w and in those 300w PS they have better regulators or something. That is why you need 300w PS, btw, still many 300w PS dont work with Athlons but its more likely to find a 300w PS than 250w that works with Athlons.

Zero07: Straight answer to your question; no you don't need a 300W or even 250W power supply for Athlon Tbird or Duron system. The finnish retailer I bought my Tbird from told that they put together Tbird systems with 200W power supplies without any problems. My system has a 230W ATX power supply (a no-brand OEM case), I'm using Tbird 800 + MSI K7Tpro + GeForce + CD-R + 2 hard drives + 8x8 case fan among other things and I don't suffer from no instability or abnormal operating voltages.

Still, putting together a brand new system, I'd buy a quality 250W PS just to be certain there will be no problems - who knows how much power future CPUs need.

Bottom line...regardless of wattage rating, use an AMD "approved" power supply from the list on AMDs web site.

It gives you that peace of mind when you know your PSU is AMD approved so I would recommend also a 300w(AMD approved)PSU.

Hey jpprod, I thought you were getting a duron, have you upgraded again?

I've had this Tbird for quite some time, ever since SocketA CPUs landed here in Finland. I noticed how little price difference there was between this CPU and a faster Duron, and since I had some extra budgeted for upgrade, I went the Tbird-way :)

I think good 300W power supplies with a minimum 25amps on the 5v rails were due to the current motherboard designs. I think you can be pretty safe with just about any power supply with Socket-A, maybe with the exception of extremely fast(<900MHz) processors.
