Does synthetic oil really cost more to make than dino oil?

It seems like extracting oil from the ground or deep beneath the ocean, refining it, shipping it on a freighter to the U.S., bottling it and distributing it would be more expensive than simply making synthetic oil in a factory here in the U.S. and bottling and distributing it.

Is synthetic oil really more expensive to produce? Or does it just cost more because the oil companies know people will buy it?

Synthetic oil is not really synthetic. It comes from the same oil reserves as regular oil. It's mainly just higher grade of regular oil that does not break down as quickly.

Synthetic oil is the perfect oil for any engine if you've never ran anything else in it for a long period of time. Normal oil forms deposits that actually cause the seals to dry out. That's why you hear of people switching to synthetic and their engine starts leaking oil; the synthetic breaks down the deposit, the dry seal gets wet and cracks.

Motor oil isn't crude oil. All motor oil comes from crude oil. So does gasoline, plastic, medicines, etc.
