Does such a device exist?

Right now, I want 3 gizmos:

1. A decent cell phone
2. An mp3 player (with at least 8gb of space)
3. A PDA, with calendar, web browser, email, wireless, bluetooth, etc

I would use these nearly every day, but it would be a PIA to carry all 3 with me, especially since i keep this stuff in a pocket or belt clip.

Is there any (preferrably slim) device that can competently perform all 3 of those functions? Of course, nice battery life, affordable price and a good screen would be nice too, but I'm not holding my breath... Or is it going to take a little while longer before these technologies are merged seamlessly?

I have the sprint version. The max space you will get with the mini SD slot is 2GB. I wished this phone has a CF or at least an SD slot

I have a motorolla mpx220 phone at work, has everything you need (except 8gb space, but it has a mini sd slot). Runs Windows mobile.

Right now if you want 8gb of space you need to get a hd based player, which never have phone functions or anything more than a media player.

thanks for the reply - that's pretty close... but only 128MB of flash memory and a less than stellar cnet review makes me cautious... i'm also not a fan of having to dump a ton of money on mini SD cards to hold all the music that i have...

You can get everything together but the 8gb, and affordability. If you're savvy enough, you can set up an FTP server from home, and listen to your full collection over wifi/edge.

You're not going to find much of anything with a ton of built in storage right now. You could wait for newer phones that support SDHC, but until then, devices like the XV6700, MDA, etc are the best you're going to get.

You could also wait for the iPhones from Apple or one of Samsung's musicphones with large amounts of builtin storage:

And CNet reviews are hardly worthy of printing out to be used as TP.

Or you could stream it via Orb like I do.

well, other online reviews didn't blow me away either... additionally, in my personal experience, i have agreed with what CNET reviews mention... not necessarily the overall score, but when you actually read through it, they make some good observations.

as for the storage issue... it's wierd that phones haven't come out with several GB of flash memory yet... the advantages seem very obvious to me, but maybe the added expense has been prohibitive in a market where price is (possibly) more important than, say, mp3 players...

i'd be VERY surprised if apple was selling ipods under cost... but i guess if they can make enough money on itunes, it's possible...

still, i haven't seen a smartphone w/ more than 128MB, which is nowhere near even the cheapest of mp3 players (i got a 512mb mp3 player for $20!)...

Of course they're not selling it under cost. They come much cheaper when you buy, say, 1,000,000,000 of them.

get the new treo 700wx from sprint... its phenomenal, much better than the 700w. Get a 4gb SD car, battery life is rather good and the device is just awesome.

wow, looks like a real nice device... but the lack of built-in wifi kills it for me :(

You'll have cellular EVDO wireless connection... DSL speed internet connection in any location that has a wireless signal (assuming you're in range of an EVDO cell tower). Sprint and Verizon both have unlimited connection plans of this type for reasonable amount.

WTF you need Wi-fi (which is a _S_L_O_W_E_R connection)?

We're testing one now with a 6gb drive, but I doubt it'll be on the market for another 3-6 months. One caveat--even though this one has 6gb only 4gb will be available for music (the other 2gb is reserved for navigation maps, POI and other content.)

edit: oops, forgot to mention this device won't have wifi either, but it will be upgradeable to Rev A.

While you fail to list your desire/requirement for Wi-Fi, you acknowledge in your original post that you're looking for leading edge technology.

There are current cell phone devices like those previously mentioned, as well as others like the LG Chocolate (2 GB storage) and the newer models of the Motorola Razor (1 GB storage on micro-SD). No current devices meet all 4 of your requirements.

I doubt seriously that any cellular technology developers will incorporate Wi-Fi into future devices, since there is little economic incentive to do so. If you want leading edge technology, you'll have to pay for EVDO cellular access.

You'll have to either compromise on your requirements... or wait.

reread point #3 of my original post to find the wifi ("wireless") requirement... i suppose it could've been clearer, but it's there :)

and yeah... it sounds like i might have to wait... the iPhone sounds somewhat promising, i guess we'll see...

Wi-Fi is wireless, however not all wireless is Wi-Fi... your criteria should be more specific, yes.

EVDO is wireless too. :p

For me, I have the Razor V3m(free after rebate and NewEvery2), with a 1 GB micro-SD (mSD I got on sale at Fry's for $35). I use the calender and alarms as my planner. I have internet, email, games (Need for Speed/Most Wanted), 1.3 megapixel camera, and MP3 capability.
